About SLB:

  • We are a global technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet.
  • At SLB we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. That is our purpose. As innovators, that's been our mission for 100 years. We are facing the world's greatest balancing act how to simultaneously reduce emissions and meet the world's growing energy demands. We're working on that answer. Every day, a step closer.
  • Our collective future depends on decarbonizing the fossil fuel industry, while innovating a new energy landscape. It's what drives us. Ensuring progress for people and the planet, on the journey to net zero and beyond. For a balanced planet.

Location:

  • SLB's Research Center based in Cambridge is part of SLB global network of research and engineering centres. Our research center is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with stateoftheart research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry.
  • SLB's Research Center based in Cambridge is a distinctive marqueelike structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. This spectacular building was completed in 1985 and the smaller second phase was opened in 1992. It has recently been classified as a Grade II listed building. Altogether, there are more than 930 m2; of laboratory space and offices for more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.

  • You will be part of a multidisciplinary team who are advancing the area of energy storage automation by conducting applied research in control, optimisation, estimation, mathematical modelling, and data analytics. Our team works on topics related to designing, characterising, and automating energy storage systems, e.g., batteries or hydrogen electrolysers for producing green hydrogen.

Your role will be to work with one or more research scientists helping to develop automation algorithms for grid or microgrid-connected batteries (implemented as battery management systems or energy management systems) to improve their reliability and longevity.

Your work will involve literature review to understand the limitations of the current approaches for battery and energy management systems, simulation study to compare the novel approaches with the state-of-the-art, and possibly, testing the algorithm in our experimental set-up.

Deliverables:

  • Learn about battery systems modelling.
  • Develop algorithms for battery management systems automation
  • Support scientists on algorithm development, simulation, and experimental study
  • Present work to the local team, as well as the business and engineering

Required Skills:

  • Passionate interest in control engineering
  • Good knowledge of Matlab
  • System dynamics modelling
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Good communication skills
Exposure to any of the following would be a plus:

  • Model predictive control
