We are looking for a GIS Consultant to join our expanding team. In this role, you will be able to be part of a small team that has a key influence on the outcomes of a wide variety of diverse and interesting projects across the globe - from helping local authorities integrate nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and resilience into their planning frameworks, to large scale strategic biodiversity planning projects, all of which have a spatial and analytical component. You will use GIS to help clients to achieve their goals through the visualisation, modelling, collation and analysis of spatial data.

The role is ideally based in Bath with hybrid working, although other office locations will be considered.

Key responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for GIS mapping, modelling, and analysis, preparing PowerPoint presentations using graphics and imagery, feeding into ecological monitoring metrics, conducting environmental research, analysing and interpreting baseline data, and preparing constraints analyses and reports, as well as helping drive the growth of the geospatial ecology service at Buro Happold


This will include:

  • Environmental data interpretation for projects including habitat and sensitivity mapping and constraints analysis.
  • Remote sensing of habitats and landcover.
  • Feeding data and analysis into masterplanning guidance to ensure ecological considerations are incorporated into masterplan projects at all levels.
  • Using GIS mapping to create zoning plans to guide development away from sensitive areas, as well as other regional scale biodiversity and environmental assessments.
  • Technical report writing including contributing to environmental/ecological impact assessments.
  • Project management.
  • Ensuring spatial data quality control.
  • Liaising with clients to incorporate ecological principles into their designs.
  • Carrying out desk studies, research and analysis.
  • Preparation of presentations in PowerPoint incorporating GIS maps and infographics.
  • Attendance at meetings at workshops.

Your skills & experience

  • Good working knowledge in the use of GIS mapping and remote sensing software (preferably QGIS but ArcGIS would also be acceptable) to present environmental data, including data capture and spatial analytics. Minimum 2 years' experience.
  • Experience in the delivery of habitat remote sensing projects in a variety of project locations across diverse landscapes is preferred.
  • Experience working in environmental/ecological consultancy.
  • Ability to interpret GIS information on a large scale to inform constraints analyses and environmental impact assessments.
  • Ability to use infographics/imagery to show complex data visually.
  • Good research and writing skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Possess initiative and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and adapt to clients' changing needs.
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English, comfortable working independently as well as within an interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Geography or earth/environmental science, GIS, Ecology, or an Environmental or developmentrelated discipline.
