Description
To assist the neonatal medical team/ANNP to carry out reviews and checks on babies on the post natal wards.

Assist neonatal medical staff to carry out a newborn check and reviews.

Ensure appropriate investigations are carried out or communicated to ward staff.

Responsible for commencing NEWS observation charts as per postnatal ward guidelines.

Monitor the continuation of antibiotics or other medication as necessary.

Report any pending problems on the postnatal wards to the nurse in charge on the neonatal unit.

Provide support and supervision to breast and bottle feeding mothers on the postnatal wards.

Provide advice and support to mothers on postnatal ward on maintaining baby's temperature.

Participate in taking of blood and urine samples.

Ensure that all appropriate referrals and appointments are made for babies

Discuss relevant follow-ups with parents.

Responsible for maintaining accurate baby's notes on the wards.

Ensure discharge/GP letter is completed prior to discharge. Update Badger daily summaries.

Ensure Child Health book is completed.

Liaise with ward and community staff re medical problems e.g. DCT+ babies and arrange hospital appointment for blood tests etc.

Liaise with ward and community staff re social problems.


To maintain a clinic for babies requiring specific blood tests that are undertaken by neonatal assistants, access the results and discuss with consultants.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: )

To maintain equipment, ensuring its availability as and when required.

Ensure that the trolley is well stocked with medical equipment and is routinely checked i.e. BM machine calibration and correct dates.

To liaise with Neonatal assistants within the team and across both sites.

To participate and train neonatal medical staff every 6 months. Support medical and midwifery students who are observing within their training.

To attend relevant meetings and study days.
