Ballifeary House - Part-time Cook


Ballifeary House is a highly regarded, small and friendly, 24-bed residential home for older adults, which belongs to the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

Our function and purpose is aimed at providing a non-institutional, Christian atmosphere; one that is caring, relaxed and happy.

This atmosphere is homely and respects the individuality, dignity and rights of privacy of each individual and it encourages and enables residents to achieve their potential capacity - physically, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and socially.


Providing nutritious and delicious, home-cooked food for our residents is a significant part of the overall service that we provide in the Home and it contributes to the high standard of care that our residents expect and have grown accustomed to over the years.

Having cooking experience and/or qualifications is essential, along with an ability to provide home-cooked food and baking.

The post is for a minimum of 16 hours per week, but more hours will be available.

Flexibility to work between 8-4pm shifts, including weekend work is essential, along with providing cover during holiday periods.

BALLIFEARY HOUSE

JOB TITLE:

COOK AND KITCHEN ASSISTANT**
REPORTING TO:Matron**
JOB PURPOSE: To prepare and serve nutritionally balanced and attractively presented meals, snacks and home baking to reflect the individual needs and requests of each resident ensuring a high standard of hygiene and safety in the kitchen and pantry area while promoting residents participation in the life of the Home.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Required:


  • At least two years' experience of cooking in a professional kitchen
  • An SVQ level 2 in Cookery or equivalent
  • To be competent in providing home cooked food and have excellent home baking skills
  • To be able to supervise/communicate effectively with kitchen support staff and contribute to providing a supportive, friendly atmosphere and positive team ethos
  • Genuine interest in working with older adults and satisfying their dietary requirements
  • Ability to communicate with residents and family members
  • To ensure the Christian ethos of the Home is maintained

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • To assist with food preparation, service of food, paying particular attention to presentation
  • To cater, where necessary, for any special diets consulting with residents on their preferences and providing a choice of menu.
  • To incorporate and make best use of fresh fruit and vegetables in the diet of each resident.
  • To maintain a check and control of food stocks and be responsible for the ordering of stock.
  • To prepare, cook and serve meals and to clear and wash up with the assistance of other staff, where appropriate.
  • To prepare "home baking" to reflect the residents wishes.
  • In agreement and consultation with the care staff, encouraged therapeutic participation by residents in food preparation in line with Health and Safety guidelines.
  • To comply with Health and Safety requirements in the kitchen and other catering areas.
  • To ensure that all aspects of current health and hygiene legislation are adhered to.
  • To be responsible to the Matron for budgetary control.
  • To be involved in the life of the Home and cater for special occasions such as parties and seasonal events.
  • To supervise and help train other catering staff in catering duties.
  • To participate in staff meetings, supervision, appraisal and staff training and help generate a good working atmosphere.
  • To have a working knowledge of the homes Health and Safety, COSHH and Environmental Health regulations
  • To have a working knowledge of the Home's policies and procedures in respect to your job
  • To be trained 121 on the use of industrial equipment according to Health & Safety procedures
  • To be in control of the cleaning routine making sure your area of responsibility is thoroughly cleaned
  • To clean and sanitise associated equipment paying particular attention to the control of bacteria
  • To dispose of waste in accordance with the homes waste disposal policy
  • In addition to the responsibilities listed above it may be necessary to perform other duties not listed. Consideration will be given to your skills and status when requesting you perform these duties.
