Purpose of role

Key tasks

  • Undertake routine and bespoke backups and restores of SQL databases (either whole DBs or specific elements) and ensure all customer data is secure and protected.
  • Manage SQL Server databases through lifecycle environments from development to customer production platforms.
  • Assist developers with queries & tuning/schema refinement.
  • Monitoring of SQL DB/service health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
  • Ensures that all tasks and procedures are carried out effectively and efficiently to agreed levels of service or specific requirements of Service Level Agreements.
  • Responds to enquiries by management, specialists or others and is able to deal with a range of problems including those of high complexity, only escalating those needing specialist or management attention.
  • Conducts investigations of operational problems, makes proposals for improvement, and implements them when appropriate using the usual control procedures. Participates in reviews of systems performance, provides consultancy, advice and assists specialists or other system or service providers to plan details of amendments and upgrades.

What do I need to do the role?

  • Experience in supporting SQL databases and associated SQL services in a complex and demanding environment.
  • Server hardware build, support and upgrading.
  • Knowledge of MOD systems and processes is desirable.
  • General network/switch/firewall management & configuration.
  • VMware vSphere/ESX infrastructure support.
  • Windows server and clients.
  • Ability to learn new skills and adapt to high rates of change.
  • Presentation, report writing and communication skills.
  • Skilled with translating technical terminology into business terminology, and with identifying business requirements.
  • Experience of supporting junior IT staff members in achieving business objectives.
  • Ability to work under demanding deadlines and work with a variety of stakeholders to deliver the required output.
