The Pathology Directorate is seeking a responsible and enthusiastic individual to work as a Administrative Assistant working on the pathology front reception at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

This is a full time post, working 37.5 hours a week. 4 part time posts, working 18.75 hours per week are also available (via separate job advert)

Working hours to cover 08:00-18:00 Mon-Fri and 09:00-12:00 Saturday on a rotational basis.


You will be required to communicate in a polite and courteous manner, display a professional appearance and assist patients and staff with their enquiries, both face to face and over the phone.


You may also be required to assist with pathology stores and other tasks as directed by the phlebotomy or laboratory managers as per the demands of the service.

You may also have the opportunity to train as a phlebotomist, at which point you would have the option to rotate between phlebotomy and reception duties as per the demands of the service

  • Open/close front reception at the start/end of the working day
  • Answer patient telephone queries
  • Book patients onto Sangix for blood test appointments
  • Act as the first point of contact for patients attending pathology, ensuring a well presented, polite, courteous, and understanding demeanour
  • Greet patients attending for blood tests and direct them to the waiting area
  • Greet contractors and other visitors to the department, and inform the appropriate Pathology staff of their arrival
  • Ensure consumables are adequately replenished throughout the day
  • Distribute stock to clinical areas
  • Take receipt of pathology samples from other hospital wards and departments
  • Transport samples to CSR/laboratories as required
  • Check fridge temperatures and report and discrepancies to senior staff
  • Receive samples from the pneumatic POD system
  • Liaise with couriers to send samples to offsite laboratories
  • Cleaning and general housekeeping tasks
  • Removal of waste from the department via the appropriate waste streams
  • Assisting with pathology consumables and reagent stores, including replenishment, stock rotation and maintaining clean and tidy storage areas
  • Other tasks as directed by the phlebotomy/laboratory managers or team leaders, as per requirements of the service
  • You may also have the opportunity to train as a phlebotomist, at which point you would have the option to rotate between phlebotomy and front reception duties as per the demands of the service
