At B&Q we have a hybrid approach to working to increase flexibility in how we work. For this opportunity we will be looking for someone to be in the office 3 days per week.


Key responsibilities


You'll lead a category merchandising team and work in partnership with the Category Buyer to curate and deliver an inspirational product range that meets the needs of our customers.

Driving sales, margin (£GM & GM%) and market share across all channels, improving sales and profit density and stock efficiency.

You'll work cross functionally to build a range architecture that ensures accessibility for all customers, across all distribution channels, physical and digital.


  • Work alongside the Category Buyer to develop a category proposition, providing analytics to support decisions that ensure it meets our customer needs, identifies opportunities and mitigates risks, whilst delivering against sales, margin, stock efficiency and market share targets
  • Create a compelling range hierarchy, incorporating assortment, space, inventory and fulfilment principles, which reflects the category strategy and meets the needs of our customers across all channels, delivering our vision of supporting all customers with access to DIY/Trade products
  • Review and monitor category performance, with the buying team, through reporting and analytics, taking action to reflect changing sales and trends
  • Manage and create sales and budget forecasts and associated business cases, including PIRs, for specific categories, ensuring shortfalls or risks to plan are identified and addressed
  • Support the Head of Merchandising in forecasting for the R&O, period forecasts and IBP process
  • Forecast volumes for all new lines (6 months), fixed buys, promotional lines, including DSV
  • Work collaboratively with the Supply Manager to optimise availability, stock and sales whilst ensuring stock exit plans are in place to support range change activity (range, promotions, clearance) and are delivered to agreed targets
  • Working alongside the Category Buyer, Channel Leads and Trading team, execute category/promotional trading plans, optimising opportunities and minimising risk, ensuring agility of the plan based on market conditions
  • Accountable for managing Small and Medium sized Range Change projects within your own category to successful conclusion across all channels, adhering to the process and within time, cost and quality parameters
  • Work collaboratively with Commercial Planning teams to successfully implement ranges across all channels
  • Work collaboratively with the Range and Space team to continuously improve sales and margin densities across all formats
  • With the Category Buyer, manage the product lifecycle including range performance, identifying and optimising trading opportunities and the delivery of promotions and range reviews
  • Manage and influence stakeholders across a range of levels, internally and externally, to support the delivery of KPIs
  • Conduct regular store (digital & physical), competitor and vendor visits to increase awareness, informing ranging and trading plans
  • Lead, empower and motivate your team to deliver category strategy, driving high performance and developing future talent whilst role modelling the B&Q values.

Required skills & experience

  • Previous experience of trading product ranges across multiple sales channels
  • Numerical and analytical with strong attention to detail
  • Commercially focussed with the ability to understand financial insights and translate this into key business deliverables
  • Knowledge and understanding of the home improvement market and product seasonality
  • Ability to understand customer insights and market trends
  • Ability to drive business performance using insights and knowledge to deliver an agile trading plan.
  • Ability to understand and manage complex range architecture
  • Strong communicator
  • Ability to lead, develop and coach commercial merchandising teams to drive high performance
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Microsoft Office skills, in particular Excel and PowerPoint
