About the role

This is an opportunity to take on a 12-month contract, covering the maternity leave of a senior communications role within our Commercial team.

It has responsibility for all corporate, external media and public relationships, ensuring our position as a purpose-led, leading retirement platform group is represented and showcased externally and aligned with the overall strategic business plan.

As interim Head of PR, you'll execute the strategy, managing effective and timely communication with the media, industry/trade bodies and organisations, in the communities within which we operate, and via corporate sponsorship.

You'll be the custodian of the corporate story and messaging that reflect our vision, strategy, and purpose, ensuring all externally facing colleagues and media spokespeople are briefed and deploy lines consistently and effectively.

Internal stakeholder management is also important, ensuring you support your People Leader (our Marketing Director) and other senior, executive-level managers such as our CEO, CCO and CFO.

A summary of key responsibilities:

  • Ensure effective PR agency relationships, focused on ensuring our reputation is protected, negativity minimised, and our strategic narrative exploited
  • Construct, manage and execute an appropriate rolling programme of strategic and sequenced communications activities across national, trade and local media, that dovetail with the broader marketing plan and are joinedup with other stakeholder communications
  • Compile, monitor and analyse metrics that monitor performance and identify territory and comment opportunities
  • Construct, obtain approval for and deploy companyapproved responses to journalist enquiries, always striving to ensure the best possible representation
  • Ensure all mediafacing material (press releases, placed articles, blogs, and comment) is constructed and approved in line with internal standards and procedures
  • Devise and support delivery of any mediafacing events (e.g. monthly media meetings, annual thought leadership. report launches, awards dinners), including liaising with reporters, industry spokespeople and venue staff
  • Source supporting information for reactive and proactive media comms from within the business.
  • Identification of key external influencers (e.g. consultants, trade bodies), ensuring they understand and continue to be briefed on our strategic narrative and we consider their opinions in our own strategic messaging development
  • Consider, support and deliver appropriate corporate sponsorship opportunities that bring our purpose to life and provide commercial and/or reputational benefit to the business. Liaise with internal community groups as required

A bit about you
Your friends would probably describe you as the relationship builder, making connections wherever you go. You'll have superb communication skills and a knack for transforming the complex into the simple and digestible.

There's lots of variety in this role and it means wearing many hats and maintaining multiple, meaningful connections with a wide variety of stakeholders.

You influence and negotiate with ease and utilise your tenacity to make the right stuff happen.

You love to work with smart people and hate mediocrity; you know there is almost always a better way of doing things even if it can't be delivered immediately.

Smaller teams, constantly learning, being challenged, having real ownership, accountability and responsibility, and being trusted to make it happen describe in a nutshell the environment you really thrive in.

You want to be part of a shared culture where you feel empowered but always know you'll never be left alone.

We've always placed more importance on culture fit above technical ability, but we'd really like you to have:

  • Experience as a senior marcomms professional, a financial journalist or a press officer either agency or in-house
  • The ability to manageup effectively within the business, and with authority, giving confidence to the Executive team that communications and protecting our reputation are completely under control
  • Experience with establishing, nurturing and leveraging longlasting professional relationships both internally and externally
  • An understanding of what it takes to have effective relationships with the UK press and broader influencer community, and how to best utilise corporate sponsorship
  • The ability to support the business in developing highquality communication, even with short notice and a mínimal brief
  • A commercial mindset and be able to see the big picture, without neglecting the details
  • Excellent communication skills, with a succinct approach
  • Confident and knowledgeable in using Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Platform, Fund Management or SIPP/pension market experience (desirable)
  • Excellent knowledge of, and a passion for, social media.
