A fantastic opportunity has opened for a dynamic and enthusiastic exercise practitioner to join the multi-professional team of consultant doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and psychologists, working within the Royal Brompton adult CF unit.

We are looking for someone with the skills, training and confidence to be able to lead exercise assessments and prescription for our adults living with cystic fibrosis and to work alongside our team of physiotherapists to deliver inpatient and outpatient exercise services.


  • The post holder will work within the Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) team, with responsibility for exercise prescription and supervision for inpatients and outpatients with CF, requiring knowledge of exercise programme creation and exercise physiology as well as an excellent level of interpersonal skills.
  • The post holder will be able to prescribe and teach a range of exercise modalities, including strength, cardiovascular training, flexibility and stretching through face to face and virtual consultations.
  • The post holder will work as an integral and active part of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Physiotherapy and multi-disciplinary team. They will be responsible for supporting the CF physiotherapy team in the provision of a patient-centred service, in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Educational objectives

  • To gain the required knowledge and skills in the relevant technical and clinical procedures, and to maintain those skills working under the Clinical Assistant Competency programme under the supervision of Specialist and Senior CF Physiotherapists.
  • To develop and maintain knowledge of the speciality of cystic fibrosis, particularly around exercise physiology and exercise training.
  • To continue to gain practical knowledge that will support the delivery of facetoface and virtual care to this particular group of patients.
  • To support the daytoday running of the Adult CF Physiotherapy Team.
  • To maintain awareness of safe practise and the need for onward referral, particularly when lone working.
Organisational and management objectives

  • To take responsibility for the organisation of the Physiotherapy home nebuliser scheme (eflows and Inebs) for adult CF ensuring patients have appropriate equipment and up to date guidance regarding cleaning and infection control.
  • To undertake patient related administration tasks such as, booking patient appointments, booking patient transport, organising outpatient appointments for Specialist CF Physiotherapists.
  • To take responsibility for activity data entry for own practice activity (data required for CQUINs)
  • To assist in the development of information and resources for patients and their families, particularly around exercise for CF.
  • To liaise with Specialist physiotherapists re exercise testing and provision of individual exercise programmes for inpatients, and liaison re followup at home by the postholder.
  • To maintain an efficient and accurate record system.
  • To use IT skills, collating input, maintaining patient database, and accessing patient data as required.
  • Adhere to departmental and directorate procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Assist in the restocking of supplies and maintenance of equipment as directed by a senior physiotherapist.
  • Participate in the Trust's appraisal and personal development plan schemes by meeting with the manager annually.
  • To maintain good and safe practise when handling specimens such as blood, sputum accurate labelling, safe handling, recording, and to ensure accurate reporting
Communication

  • Demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to staff, patients, and their families, ensuring patients feel reassured and supported.
  • Carry out assigned administrative tasks as directed by a senior physiotherapist.
  • Take patient phone calls and seek advice from CF specialist physiotherapists when appropriate, and to use reassurance skills that require tact and persuasion on occasions.
  • Report untoward incidents and any other relevant information to a Specialist Physiotherapist immediately.
  • Inform a physiotherapist if asked to carry out a task that the individual does not have the training or capacity to do.
