About the role:


It's an exciting time to join the London Commercial team, as we undergo significant growth to support our overall strategic business plan.

The London Commercial Team, specialise in Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate programmes across Property, Casualty and Motor Fleet.

We have a bespoke Motor Fleet team, as well as dedicated underwriters in the Major Client and Mid-Market space to ensure that we deliver a consistent level of service and relationship management.

Our key broking partners include Global, National and Independent specialists, most of whom operate in the diverse 'square mile' area.


We are currently looking to strengthen the team and bring to market the opportunity to join us a Commercial Fleet Underwriter, specialising in Existing Business.


The Commercial Fleet Underwriter, will look to deliver on the trading team targets through profitable underwriting of fleet risks within agreed authority levels, whilst developing key broker relationships in line with branch objectives.

You'll work at least 40% of your week away from home, either at one of our office locations, visiting clients or attending industry events.


What you'll be doing:


  • Underwrite predominantly existing business profitably, accurately, consistently and in line with established underwriting practices and governance framework, using the full range of appetite and tools available
  • Use information gathering, a strong knowledge of policy wordings and industry trends to select, understand and assess risks and makes sound assessments of the probability of exposure to determine a suitable premium from an accurately established technical price
  • Develop credibility with brokers and customers, using effective questioning to understand all aspects of importance to both broker and customer, and design a solution which meets those
  • Put sustained effort into building influential relationships externally and internally, take ownership and respond to immediate broker demands in a timely manner and keep them informed about relevant ongoing activity
  • Build strong trading relationships with brokers, through visits and large case liaison, to maximise financial results. Lead and contribute to meetings with brokers and end customers to portray AXA capabilities and secure new business opportunities
  • Build a reputation as a trading expert with a panel of intermediaries and build confidence in the branch ability through interaction with our Underwriting Technical Centre
  • Demonstrate contribution to loss ratio control by effectively implementing branch UW controls
  • Identify poorly performing accounts and investigate reasons for lack of retention. Agree and implement actions with Senior Underwriters, Underwriting Manager and Account Managers to increase retention

About you:


What we're looking for:


  • Cert CII qualification with DIP CII desirable
  • Strong trading capability commercial awareness, negotiation skills, ability to build strong broker relationships
  • Pragmatic and confident decision maker with good numerical reasoning skills
  • Strong analytical skills with proven experience of account monitoring and action planning
  • High level of technical underwriting expertise in a composite insurance environment (Commercial Fleet)
  • Sound knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for insurance (including treating customers fairly)
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the commercial fleet insurance market
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent risk assessment and risk management skills.
  • Good organisation and planning skills


As a precondition of employment for this role, you must be eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
