An opportunity has arisen to come and work with our forward-thinking Community Midwives at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust Brighton and Hayward's Heath locations.


As Lead Midwife for one of the Community Midwifery Teams you will ensure woman and people accessing care from these teams receive high quality, contemporary and family centred services.

You will ensure the smooth day to day provision of care, encompassing National Agendas, to lead by example and provide clinical supervision.


The post holder will take overall responsibility for the Community teams, working closely with other health professionals to ensure individual packages of care are created to maximise best practice.

Build collaborative relationships with teams and MSW

Liaise with admin staff, other community team leaders and the MDT to ensure smooth running of midwifery care provision.

Oversee rostering, appraisals, annual leave requests and other HR related duties for the community midwifery teams


Work closely with Specialist midwives eg mental health midwife, safeguarding, diabetes to ensure good communication pathways to share information about service users whose needs span more than one speciality.


Cross-site working may be required to cover for other team leader absence, and to ensure understanding and general oversight of the running of community midwifery services.

  • Assess, identify and evaluate own knowledge and practice needs in relation to knowledge and skills required to meet the demand of the role.

  • Responsible for organisation and operational management of a community midwifery team.
  • Responsible for day to day line management of band 5/6 midwives and maternity support workers/care assistants in the community teams.
  • Responsible for day to day supervision, allocation and coordination of clinically based teams ensuring adequate cover and skill mix for the 24/7 period.
  • Ensure all team members attend statutory and mandatory training days.
