We are currently looking to recruit a motivated, enthusiastic play specialist for our Children's Emergency Department and Paediatric Assessment Unit.

The role involves working flexibly to meet the healthcare needs of children and their families through the provision of appropriate play and recreational activities.


The Children's Emergency Department provides nursing care and support to children and young people aged 0-15 years in a purpose built environment.

It is co-located to A&E and has its own designated 2 bedded resuscitation area within the unit. The Paediatric Assessment Unit is also co-located and provides care for patients who require a short stay admission.


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.


The trust has recently gained 'teaching hospital' status which reflects the dedicated work of many teams and individuals who have set the standard for delivering high quality training, learning and education at all levels of the workforce.

  • To assist in providing a welcoming environment that is child/adolescent friendly, reflecting cultural needs.
  • To organise the facilities and supervise the play of the children in the ward/department appropriate to their age and to complement the child's plan of care.
  • To participate in the play preparation for clinical procedures of individual children.
  • To use play to facilitate the expression of feelings, respecting confidentiality but acting on information as appropriate.
  • To involve parents/carers in the child's play activities and to offer support and advice on play related matters.
  • To keep written records of play input with each child, daily playroom activities, participating in audits as required/requested.
  • To keep up to date with professional developments and to participate in play related studies and support groups.
  • To ensure that the equipment is safe and maintained in good order, in accordance with Trust health and safety policy.
  • To be responsible for own professional development and participate in IPR and objective setting with the ward sister.

EDUCATION

  • To contribute to the teaching of students and other healthcare professionals in the role and value of play.
  • To act as a resource for all members of the multidisciplinary team regarding play in hospital.
  • To contribute to the orientation programmes of appropriate staff on the role of play in hospital.
