Description

Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are allied health professionals. We work with parents, carers and other professionals, such as teachers, nurses, occupational therapists and doctors. There are around 20,000 practising SLTs in the UK working in a variety of settings.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) have estimated that 80% of service users in mental health settings have an identified speech, language and/or communication difficulty.

Studies have also found that there is a higher prevalence of swallowing difficulties and higher rate of choking among service users in mental health settings.

During the apprenticeship you will be given training and support to work as an assistant in the speech and language therapy team, while at the same time studying towards an undergraduate degree in Speech and Language Therapy at Birmingham City University.

The degree course is fully funded as part of this apprenticeship.

This role will involve working across multiple sites and locations and attended classes at Birmingham City University.
