Role Purpose
The PR & Media Manager (contract) will take the lead on promoting the charity's Policy, Campaigning, and Research work in the media and helping to ensure we run an effective and efficient reactive press office function (Newsdesk).
The role holder will act as the main PR point of contact for the Policy, Public Affairs, and Research team, as well as our public campaigning team.
You'll hit the ground running, play a key role in General Election comms planning and be able to pick up our priority themes in improving the end of life experience for everyone, including financial insecurity and inequity.
With excellent writing ability, great media relations skills, and the ability to create a compelling story, you'll be able to secure coverage that influences key decision-makers and gives a voice to people living with terminal illness.

Main Duties
- Gain a high standard of proactive and reactive media coverage to support the charity's public campaigning activities, key policy themes and activities, and research funded by our client. This includes writing media materials and liaising with media, and supporting other colleagues to do so if delegating.
- Identify strong hooks for news, opinion and features in broadcast, print and online media.
- Play a lead role in the PR Team's daily 'Newsdesk' responding to the news agenda and opportunities for our client to provide expert commentary, ensuring the best tactic to achieve media coverage is used.
- Be a positive role model supporting and coaching more junior colleagues with Newsdesk activities.
- Work collaboratively with other channel owners in Communications and Marketing to ensure external communications are aligned.
- Lead on General Election media strategy and planning, in collaboration with core working group.
- Manage a forward plan of Policy, Public Affairs, Campaigning and Research work for the Communications and Marketing Department.
- Advise colleagues on the sequencing of stories, ensuring they fit in with other activities, and playing an active role in keeping the Communications Planner up to date.
- Advise colleagues on what Policy, Public Affairs, Campaigning and Research work has the most PR & media potential, and prioritising this.
- Keep abreast of developing issues in our interest areas that could present an opportunity to promote our spokespeople, campaigning or policy work.
- Review Research and Policy Reports and academic research papers to identify story hooks.
- Develop strong relationships with target media, maintaining an expert knowledge of their interests and using this to identify opportunities.
- Support a range of spokespeople to respond to identified media opportunities, including advising and supporting interviews, briefings and written submissions.
- Identify and move quickly to capitalise on any reactive opportunities.
- Represent the PR Team at meetings with external agencies and other bodies as required, linking with close partner organisations to coordinate media work.
- Recording media interactions on Vuelio.
- Be a key contact for our broadcast agency, Markettiers. Collaborating and identifying opportunities for spokespeople and comment.
- Ensure activities are effectively evaluated with key learnings for future.
- Support on call rota.
Essential Criteria:
- Excellent writing ability, able to convey a compelling story and simplify detailed information for multiple audiences.
- Ability to review simple data such as ONS stats and understand the story they tell.
- Confident communicator able to communicate ideas verbally.
- Excellent influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- A creative thinker, able to spot opportunities and adapt plans to best advantage.
- An effective multitasker, able to prioritise and work at pace under pressures, meeting deadlines.
Experience:
Substantial experience in PR and media working on policy, campaigning and research stories.
Hold positive relationships with key media including health, science, social affairs, political and lobby/Westminster correspondents.
Working in a busy press office, responding to both reactive and proactive media opportunities, at pace.
Writing and issuing comments that secure media coverage.
