We have an exciting opportunity within our Grounds and Gardens Department who are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Skilled Gardener.
Purpose of the Position:
The preparation and maintenance of gardens, lawn areas, wildflower areas and countryside (woods and
lakes) as directed by the Senior Gardener.
General estate duties will also be from required from time to time such as snow clearing, helping on other
teams such as Golf and Grounds and anything else reasonable for the college to ask.
Departmental Information
The Gardens Dept are responsible for maintaining around 250 acres of land at Wellington College's 400
acre site. This includes formal gardens, lawn areas, trees, woodlands and lakes. In addition there is a
heathland and SSSI that is managed in consultation with Natural England. There is also a garden that was at
Chelsea Flower Show in 2015 and rebuilt at The College in 2016. The department has a wide and varied
role and has invested heavily in the right equipment to carry out their work effectively and efficiently.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Maintaining formal gardens using good horticultural practice at all times
- To edge, mow and present lawns neatly and effectively.
- To cut hedges and shrubs depending on the time of year.
- Leaf clearing and other autumnal tasks
- Gritting roads and path ways as directed by senior staff.
Education Attainment
Secondary Education or equivalent.
Professional Qualifications
Full and valid driving licence.
Previous gardening experience
The Grounds and Gardens Manager may from time to time, require the gardener to undergo training relative
to their role or related functions.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential Desirable
- Experience of using hedgecutters, strimmers
- Willingness to learn or get a qualification in
- Good knowledge of plants and their maintenance
- CS 30 Chainsaw certificate
Excellent communication skills to enable effective dialogue with colleagues, staff, visitors and
where applicable, students.
Able to perform well and remain professional under pressure.
