We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Psychology for people to use their skills and knowledge to improve employment rates among autistic individuals.

A Research Associate post is available for a fixed term contract basis from the 1st May 2023 to the 1st November May 2024.

The role has been identified as a part-time post at 60%FTE, but we are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit both the individual and the University.


You will join the vibrant community of academic staff, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers that make up the Sheffield Autism Research Lab (ShARL).

In this varied and dynamic role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a programme of research on understanding and tackling the barriers to employment experienced by autistic adults, funded by the Colt foundation.

You will liaise directly with autistic individuals to form a project-specific co-production panel.

You will design, create and conduct a nationally representative survey of employers to assess knowledge of autism, perceived barriers to employing autistic people and willingness and intention to employ autistic people.

You will also co-develop and trial a behaviour change intervention aimed at increasing employment of autistic people.


You will have a PhD in Psychology or a related discipline, excellent knowledge and understanding of autism, and previous experience of working with autistic or other neurodiverse individuals.

Previous experience of doing co-production work, and working knowledge of models or approaches to behaviour change (e.g. the COM-B model and Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) approach (Michie et al. 2011); the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) (Cane et al. 2012); the Taxonomy of Behaviour Change Techniques (Michie et al are desirable.
