We have a vacancy for a newly qualified band 5 Orthoptist. This is a 1 year fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. There may be an opportunity for permanent hours going forward.

You will be based at the Royal Bolton hospital working with our friendly team of 7 Orthoptists. You will be working with a broad range of patients, and be able to gain experience in all areas.

The main duties of the job will be to work with orthoptic patients in clinics and community locations. You will gain experience with stroke patients, special needs patients and all manner of motility and neurological conditions.

We are looking for an enthusiastic newly qualified Orthoptist who is excited about their first role and who is motivated to develop and work within a team of supportive dynamic staff.

The department has had a recent £1.1 million investment for redesign to improve flow and capacity.

It also has had £500,000 investment in upgrading and expanding equipment to allow us to deliver state of the art services.

The department has its own dedicated outpatient area on 2 floors and 2 dedicated Ophthalmic Theatres with dedicated staff and full access to these.

There are ambitious plans to expand the Glaucoma virtual services run by AHPs and Technicians. There are dedicated IOP clinics set up to help the flow of activity.


The Ophthalmology unit offers a wide range of services, ranging from retinal, glaucoma, diabetes, oculoplastic, corneal, cataract, Neuro, Squint, emergency services and ocular motility.

The unit provides training to Junior Doctors and strives to be part of Research, Innovation and Quality Improvement.

The unit is committed to digital transformation and has used Open Eyes platform to transform the way we work including paperless working.

The postholder will provide high quality Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner. BIOS preceptorship will be offered for newly qualified staff.

This involves knowledge and interpretation of professional Orthoptic standards and following local protocols, arranging onward referrals in priority order.


assessing diagnosing and managing a full range of conditions in adults and children with visual impairment, ocular motility conditions and amblyopia providing evidence based treatment.
