Opteran is looking to appoint several interns to work with our team for ~6 weeks starting in June. We are also looking for 1-2 placement students starting in September 2024
We are keen to hear from anyone interested in biomimicry and natural intelligence. You may study computer science, engineering, neuroscience or something similar.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of an internship/placement student would be to work on specific projects that support our research, development and product teams.

We would design these projects around your skills and interests in alignment with the teams needs.

The Company

After 8 years of research, Opteran has pioneered brain biomimicry - the ability to understand real brains and re-engineer them.

Starting with how insect brains see, avoid collisions, navigate and make decisions, reproducing these biological systems so efficiently they run on low-end silicon to enable machines to behave more naturally.

Providing an alternative to current photogrammetry and deep learning approaches, this has broken through today's limitations; not only is it small, lightweight and ultra-low powered, it is orders of magnitude more robust and is also verifiable, is edge only and does not require data.

We call it 'natural intelligence'.

The Person

Working towards a University Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
Basic programming experience and a desire to advance this skill in one or more common languages such as python / C++.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to function effectively in a team.
Enthusiasm for Opteran's mission to enable true robotic autonomy.

What the internship is like

An overview from one of our previous interns who undertook an internship with us last summer and is now on a year in industry placement with us in Sheffield.

This placement was a great opportunity for networking by working and meeting with a combination of other placement students along with the great and supportive people at Opteran who were always willing to help and provide support when needed.

Overall, it was a great chance to learn through practical experience in an exciting environment.

There I was able to work on 2 different and interesting projects in a relatively short time, allowing me to work on and develop skills not covered by my course.

In my 1st project, I researched biomimicry of vision with a cutting-edge Sony camera plus an Opteran development kit (ODK). Collected a series of timelapse images over 24h in varying conditions. I designed, built and tested the imaging rig, wired light sensors, wrote python code for image and luminosity value collection and interpreted all the data using excel and ImageJ. All of these were software and hardware I had never used.

In my 2nd project, I used and tested an Opteran-developed tool to calibrate and characterise algorithms. I also assessed the capabilities of the tool and its operational envelope. As such, I had to develop a simple testing rig and several synthetic tests while capturing real-world datasets to test the algorithms and assess the tool. To carry out the project, I learned and used an operating system and its tools (Linux - Ubuntu), hardware such as a luxmeter to measure environmental conditions, and a programming language (python - notebooks).
