Description

Support workers work independently and as part of a team to deliver care and treatment as required to patients with chronic respiratory conditions who may or may not have oxygen requirements.

They can complete this in community settings including clinics, gyms, community halls, and patient homes as needed.


To work alongside the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team and complete assessment, and physical outcome measures, participate, and help support the group rehabilitation.

To provide support, reassurance, guidance, and escalation as needed to the qualified members of the team.

What is Staff Bank?


Our EPUT NHS staff bank is an entity managed by the trust that hires clinical and non-clinical healthcare professionals to take on shifts at our trust hospitals and community settings.

Here at EPUT we maintain our own bank of specialist staff to ensure that we are able offer safe and effective care at all times.


All our permanent staff are automatically enrolled onto the staff bank however this does not mean you have to work any additional shifts, but the option is there for you if you wish.

  • To regularly undertake clinical procedures as delegated and under the guidance of the clinical team members e

g:
blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation as required

  • To plan and implement treatment and care for patients with chronic respiratory conditions alongside a written care plan, within professional guidelines and limitations, and under the guidance of a registered practitioner. This may include interventions for breathlessness management, exercise, advanced care planning, and inhaler technique checking.
  • To monitor and evaluate the patient during any care given, and to escalate concerns or changes to a registered practitioner in a timely and effective manner
  • To be aware of and manage the physical needs of the individual in the context of other needs that may be complex
  • To be familiar with home oxygen equipment and to support a patient in the use of this equipment and in the adherence of their treatment
  • To undertake core band 4 competencies applicable to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service
  • Undertake any training and development deemed appropriate by your line manager
  • Ensure knowledge, skills, and competencies relating to the role are updated as required
  • Identify barriers to communication and use a wide range of communication techniques and interpersonal skills to encourage engagement
  • Provide motivation, empathy and reassurance regarding barriers to change
  • Signpost individuals to an appropriate range of primary and secondary care, community and voluntary support organisations
  • To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, carers and other professionals to ensure a consistent approach to patient care and understanding of the therapeutic aims for the patient
  • To teach patients when appropriate in the use of equipment, such as walking sticks, frames, nebulisers, and inhalers
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Maintain accurate written records to ensure that service user details and details of the care given is recorded in notes line with Trust policies
  • To assist in the smooth running of the service by screening referrals, answering the telephone, dealing with queries, tasking and relaying messages
  • Participate in the promotion of the service, attending meetings where deemed relevant to role
  • Work with and support other members of the Multidisciplinary team as required
