Description

To act as multi-skilled Estates operative, undertaking all aspects in the day to day running of parks and open spaces.


To carry out grass cutting, strimming, machinery operation, cemetery duties, hedge cutting, play area maintenance, tree work and general garden maintenance in the Council's parks and open spaces.

To undertake any reactive work that can occur during the daily operations of the parks and open spaces.

To help with the management and care of wildlife-sensitive areas.


To help with the collection, transportation and distribution of materials needed for maintenance across the Council's sites using available machinery and manually.


To ensure that a high level of presentation and attention to detail is applied at all times and across all ground's maintenance work, including litter picking and keeping paths or surrounding areas in a tidy condition.


To ensure that appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn, and that the equipment is in good condition, any faulty equipment is to be reported immediately to the Parks & Open Spaces Manager (BTC H&S Policy - Personal Protective Equipment refers) and should be replaced as soon as possible.


To carry out cemetery duties as required, including the preparation of graves using mechanical and manual systems and backfilling following interment.

Work will be carried out in a sympathetic manner and not intrusive during any interments of burials. This work can sometimes occur out of normal working hours.


To ensure that before each and every operation all machinery is checked for damage or missing guards, and that the guards are fitted in the correct position, all lubrication is in place and filters checked and all equipment is kept in a clean condition.

Any faulty equipment should not be used and reported immediately to the Estates Manager/Deputy. (BTC H&S Policy - Operation of Grass-Cutting/Strimming Machinery refers).

To ensure that all health and safety paperwork is completed and recorded correctly. To ensure compliance and due regard for all aspects of health and safety.


To ensure all relevant training is up to date and refresher training is notified to the Estates manager when appropriate.

This should also include any vaccinations/inoculations etc.

To ensure that the appropriate vehicular checks are carried out and documented prior to vehicle/mower/machinery leaving the depot.


To ensure that equipment and any vehicles are locked and that the keys are not left in the unattended vehicles and/or mowing equipment.


To ensure that any chemicals (weed killer etc) and any flammable liquids or substances are locked away and handled in a safe manner (BTC H&S Policy - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health refers).


To carry out tasks as set out on the routine maintenance schedule, for example cutting back vegetation at various sites, maintenance of Priory Pond and Town Wells, emptying of litter bins, litter picking, maintenance of paths, drain clearance, and work to flower beds and borders within all of the Council's parks and open spaces.

To work alongside schools / volunteer groups as required.


To provide cover for carrying out watering duties of the town's hanging baskets and flower beds during the summer months, as required.

To attend civic events as required (3 or 4 events a year).


To carry out such other duties and responsibilities as may be required corresponding with the duties and responsibilities of the post, or as requested by the Estates Manager/Deputy.


Be willing to train, learn and develop new skills to be used for the benefit of the people of Bodmin and the Town Council.
