The role of the ALS tutor is to provide high quality teaching and learning for English, Maths, language and study skills to identified SEND learners in small groups and 1:1 to learners across our academies.


In this rewarding role, you will provide in and out of class support to assist learners with learning difficulties/disabilities to help them achieve their best possible outcomes.


You will be a key part of the team, and will assist in the planning, preparation & assessment of learning, giving feedback to tutors and managers on learners.


You will have the personal skills and experience to be able to effectively support learners, dealing with challenging behaviour when it arises, and helping them to develop their own coping strategies.

The role will require travel between Academies and venues.


Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following areas:

  • Deliver teaching and learning sessions for small groups to facilities support session on English, maths, language and study skills
  • To complete assessments on learners in line with quality teaching and learning
  • To set and review SMART targets for learners attending session in line with quality teaching and learning
  • Utilise learning resources and opportunities, including ICT, fully and effectively in order to enhance learner experience and employability
  • Assessing additional support and referrals to make recommendations for reasonable adjustments
  • Providing guidance on support options in ways that will maximise individual learning potential and achievement advising on how teaching practice and learning environments can become adjusted to the needs of the student
  • Signposting learners to appropriate internal and external agencies and services
  • Working collaboratively with quality department including attending curriculum meetings and maintaining strong communication to discuss progression and support for learners
  • Devising and reviewing risk assessments, support plans and recommendations for support delivery
  • Providing and or coordinating training for team members as required
  • Maintaining relevant knowledge of resources, legislation and best practice, and making recommendations as appropriate
  • Maintaining and auditing records in line with ALS funding. Keeping accurate and timely records using MIS systems relating to delivery and for internal reports
  • Maintaining an adequate supply of equipment and relevant resources
  • Actively promoting the provision available to current and potential learners supporting enrolment, induction, and open events
  • Developing, maintaining and promoting links with external agencies and services for signposting to staff and learners
  • Working collaboratively with the Safeguarding Team
  • Experience of teaching in the lifelong learning sector
  • Experience of providing additional support to learners
  • Sound knowledge of elearning systems.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to follow processes
  • Enthusiasm in the workplace
  • Work well under pressure
  • Knowledge of ESFA funding rules and guidance
  • Experience in the delivery of Pre-Employment Training
  • Experience within Construction is desirable


You will need to hold or be working towards your Maths and English L2/C grade to be considered for this role and be willing to work towards an adult learner support or equivalent qualification.


  • A valid teaching qualification at a minimum of PTLLS
