The Antenatal and Newborn Screening lead will be responsible for the coordination and oversight of all of the NHS Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes in the Trust.

They will be the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi-professional team.

You will lead a small team delivering expert care.

They must be able to make decisions based on sound knowledge and current evidence, whilst providing advice and dealing with a complex range of midwifery and neonatal problems.

Within this remit, you must also be able to develop and facilitate evidence based clinical care pathways that are benchmarked and meet national screening requirements.


As lead midwife you must hold an in-depth understanding of care pathways and national guidelines related to the ANNB screening programmes.


The lead midwife will utilise her midwifery expertise to act as an expert with enhanced experience and clinical skill in relation to antenatal and newborn pathways and to contribute to the multidisciplinary care pathway in ensuring delivery of safe care with compassion.


Continuously monitor quality and effectiveness of the screening programmes through KPI tracking, audits and surveys and take effective action to address issues and promote quality, implement changes as appropriate.

Communicates all relevant information to pregnant people, families and multidisciplinary teams both internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure responsive seamless care

The maternity service cares for around 4500 pregnant people and families per year.

With an overall CQC rating of good the maternity, obstetric and neonatal team work collaboratively to provide quality care that is safe, effective and well-led.

  • Deliver a level of service which is equitable, evidence based and consistent with the recommendations and standards of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC)
  • The lead midwife will utilise her midwifery expertise and enhanced experience and clinical skill in relation to antenatal and newborn pathways and to contribute to the multidisciplinary care pathway in ensuring delivery of safe care with compassion.
  • Act as a resource for other healthcare staff in relation to all issues related to the ANNB screening offering specialist advice.
  • Continuously monitor quality and effectiveness of the screening programmes, taking effective action to address issues and promote safety and quality and implement changes as appropriate.
