    About the Graduate Teaching Assistant Role

    As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will hold a unique position in the University, being both a registered postgraduate researcher (PGR) and carrying out teaching/teaching support duties. Your key responsibilities will include:

    1. Completing a programme of researcher development sessions to enhance your research skills.
    2. Undertaking tailored continuing researcher development to advance your knowledge in your subject area.
    3. Completing a programme of training in teaching in Higher Education to develop your teaching expertise.
    4. Pursuing a PhD programme of research under the guidance of an appointed supervisory team.
    5. Delivering up to six hours of teaching per week as directed by the Head of Department.
    6. Undertaking up to nine hours per week of marking and preparation for undergraduate programmes.
    7. Enhancing the research culture of the department and the University through participation in development activities, including publication and presenting at conferences.

    About You

    To be successful in this role, you will need to hold a 2.1 or above undergraduate degree in a relevant subject. A Masters degree would also be an advantage. You will have a passion for pursuing original research in your subject area and a desire to develop your teaching ability by supporting an experienced and dynamic undergraduate programme team.

    You will be highly motivated, resilient, and determined to succeed. You will be committed to undertaking a PhD and possess strong written and oral communication skills along with excellent organisational skills.

    Please note that if you already have a PhD in the research area you are applying for, your application will not normally be considered unless submitted for a suitably different research area.

    What We Offer

    We offer a full-time fixed-term contract for three years, commencing October 2025. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will receive:

    • A salary package worth £28,000.
    • A full waiver of the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education tuition fee, worth approximately £3,000.
    • Entitlement to sick pay, maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave, in accordance with University policies and procedures.

    Interviews for shortlisted candidates are expected to be held online via Teams or Zoom. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to deliver a short presentation on their research project and answer questions from a Panel of academic experts.
