Description
To work as an integral and active part of the adult CF multi-disciplinary team.

They will be responsible for the exercise provision to all CF patient who attend the Adult CF unit, working in an effective, efficient and cost-effective way.


  • Be responsible for the provision of exercise to patients, supported by a CF specialist physiotherapist.
  • Carry out clinical tasks, such as instruction/supervision and prescription of daily individual exercise programmes, requiring a wide range of technical ability, as well as an excellent level of interpersonal skills.
  • Carry out clinical assessments independently such as oxygen saturation, heart rate and blood glucose with interpretation of these for safely exercising patients.
  • Carry out assessments for patients following hospital discharge and feedback these assessments at multidisciplinary meetings. This will include close liaison with the multidisciplinary team about the patient status.
  • To carry out onetoone exercise sessions with both inpatients and outpatients.
  • To be responsible for the setup and delivery of virtual exercise classes.
  • Assess patients at clinics and annual reviews, encouraging activity and exercise within patients' daily lives and complete core clinical assessments such as exercise testing.
  • Monitor stock of disposable physiotherapy and nebuliser equipment, liaising with the specialist nurse re: ordering items as required.
  • To contribute to the induction of new physiotherapists and physiotherapy students.
  • Participate in continued personal education.

  • To work effectively as a core member of the adult CF multidisciplinary team.
  • Within specific guidelines and following training, to be responsible for a clinical caseload working within codes of practice and professional guidelines. This includes patient documentation in the electronic medical records.
  • To independently perform complex aspects of assessment in the hospital, outpatient clinic, in the patients' home or community environments, including exercise testing, blood glucose monitoring and body composition analysis.
  • To independently perform complex aspects of patient care in the hospital, such as daily supervised patient exercise sessions, progression of exercise programmes, virtual exercise classes and activity monitoring.
  • To occasionally work alone in the community at patients' gyms and houses and reviewing exercises programmes.
  • To motivate patients to exercise, set SMART goals and to address barriers to adherence.
  • To be responsible for performing given tasks and reporting any concerns to the specialist Physiotherapist or appropriate member of the clinical team through daily feedback.
  • To be aware of and adhere to Trust and local policies and procedures.
  • To provide programmes of activity / exercise prescriptions that have a therapeutic basis following evidenced based guidelines supported by the CF physiotherapists.
  • To carry out risk assessments and to ensure the use of safe practice, particularly when carrying out exercise testing and exercise programmes.
  • To demonstrate a physical ability to carry out interventions and therapeutic handling without direct supervision. There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during the day.
  • To be responsible for the safe use of equipment, adhering to the Trust medical device policy. This includes competency and accuracy to use equipment by you, other healthcare professionals, carers, and patients. This job will involve frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions e.g., sputum, unpleasant smells, and occasional exposure to hostility in the form of verbal and physical aggression.
