We have an excellent opportunity for a
Bioinformatician to work with scientists, technicians, and software developers supporting large-scale scientific projects within the Cellular Informatics Team at Wellcome Sanger Institute on a 12 month Contract (will consider as a possible Internal secondment opportunity).


Perhaps you are a bioinformatician who wishes to broaden your knowledge of good software development practices? Alternatively, you are a software developer with a burgeoning interest in genetics? Either way, if you are enthusiastic about both science and software engineering, then this might be a suitable position.


About the role:

You will support Cellular Operations' laboratory and faculty teams. Cellular Operations have recently been engaged with the SGE (saturation genome editing) project. This involves making tens of thousands of unique edits to genetic sequences. Designing and tracking these edits manually would not be feasible. Cellular Informatics has worked with them to create pipelines to automate this task.

The role will involve;

  • Understanding both the science and the lab practices to a sufficient degree that they can work with the rest of the team to automate these processes in software where possible.
  • Having a broad understanding of the methods and tools available to those making bioinformatics software and be able to advise the team on how best to use them to produce software to meet the needs of Cellular Operations.
  • Contributing to the writing of such software in a disciplined and professional manner.

The Cellular Informatics team that is part of a broader Pipeline Solutions unit, which consists of a broad group of software developers, bioinformaticians, and data scientists.

We operate a hybrid working pattern with 2 days in the office and the rest working from home. Bioinformaticians can fulfil the majority of their roles working from home.

Essential Technical skills:


  • Knowledge of genomics (or willingness to learn) sufficient to communicate confidently with both scientists and lab technicians.
  • Competence in modern software development processes maintainable code, version control, testing, and appropriate documentation.
  • Broad knowledge of bioinformatics techniques and software libraries.

  • Ability to deliver components by cocreating value with the stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to follow agreed design standards and principles.
  • Highly developed analytical and problemsolving skills.

Application Process:


The selection process stages will be; 30 minute initial interview over zoom, a small coding exercise to complete at home, and then finally a 2 hour interview and pairing exercise.

Other Information:


Salary range:
£35,849 - £41,000 (dependant on skills and experience)


Contract Type: 12 months Contract. Will consider as secondment opportunity for internal employees.
