Job Introduction

The Library makes an essential contribution to the academic scholarship and success of the School and is very well used by pupils, particularly Upper School pupils.

The Library is formed of nine rooms on the first floor of the historic Ashburnham House.

The Graduate Library Trainee will join and be supported by a dedicated team of Librarians comprising the School Librarian, Deputy Librarian and Senior Library Assistant.


This role is intended for a graduate who wishes to gain Library experience before undertaking a postgraduate course in Librarianship/ Information Studies or who may wish to specialise in school librarianship.

Prior experience is not essential as training will be given.

Main Responsibilities
Westminster School is committed to developing its Library service throughout the organisation.


The Graduate Library Trainee will assist in the daily running of the Library and have responsibility for the Issue Desk at the start of the school day.

Their excellent interpersonal and IT skills will assist them in daily tasks, including, but not limited to, the issue, renewal and return of loans, assisting pupils and staff with inquiries and processing new stock.

In addition, they will help with shelving, keeping the shelves tidy and creating eye-catching displays and signs in the Library and around the School.

The Graduate Library Trainee will also support the other Librarians with projects such as weeding, stocktakes and stock moves.

Finally, the trainee will assist in the supervision of pupils, including managing pupil behaviour as needed to maintain a calm environment.


Caring for the Collections (training will be given)

  • Assist with information entry and updates on Oliver, the Library Management System
  • Assist with processing the Library's physical collections (books, DVDs, Magazines, etc.)
  • Support the Librarians in developing the School's digital collections of eResources
  • Assist with the weeding and stocktake of collections in line with the Library's best practices

Access and Outreach

  • Respond to enquiries from pupils and staff
  • Assist in maintaining a Library that is welcoming to all
  • Support Library Inductions and Information Literacy activities within the Library
  • Assist the Librarians in the preparation of displays in the Library and around the School
  • Produce newsletters and social media posts to promote the Library and its collections to a variety of different audiences

General

  • Continue developing professional knowledge and skills through involvement with the School Library Association and other networking groups
  • Any other duties that the School Librarian may reasonably request

Hours of work
The position is a full-time, term-time only post for one academic year.

Additional holiday hours will need to be worked, with the details as follows:

- two days at the end of Play term (September to December)
- two days at the end of Lent term (January to March)
- two days at the start of Election term (April to July)
- two days at the end of Election term


The exact hours of work are 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday, with one unpaid hour for lunch, with Saturdays being worked on an alternate basis from 8:00am - 1:00pm.

You will be expected to open the Library at 8:30am most days. Flexibility will be required due to shift changes in Library hours between 8:00am and 6:30pm.


Salary
The salary for this role is £20, pro rata), based on a £25,000 FTE.

Westminster School is a selective day and boarding school for boys aged 13 to 18 and girls aged 16 to 18.


There are approximately 760 pupils in all: 360 (boys only) in the Lower School (Years 9 to 11); and a co-educational (one third girls, two thirds boys) Upper School (Years 12 and 13) of 400.
