£ £12.25 per hour (equating to £21,840 to £25,480)


Accommodation:
subsidised accommodation available on site or in local town

provided free between staff houses and hotel


Hours: 40 per week
Progress your pay as you develop your skills through our Skills Development (SD) Levels:

  • SD1: £10.50 per hour, and be eligible for £130 gratuities per month. 28 days' holidays (inclusive of Bank Holidays)
  • SD2: £10.75 per hour, and be eligible for £150 gratuities per month. 28 days' holidays (inclusive of Bank Holidays)
  • SD3: £11.00 per hour, and be eligible for £170 gratuities per month. 30 days' holidays (inclusive of Bank Holidays)
  • SD4: £11.25 per hour, and be eligible for £190 gratuities per month. 30 days' holidays (inclusive of Bank Holidays)
  • SD5: £11.75 per hour, and be eligible for £210 gratuities per month. 32 days' holidays (inclusive of Bank Holidays)

THE ROLE OF GARDENER

This is a truly special role where you'll spend your day working in the breath-taking surroundings in a peaceful corner of the Lake District.

As our Gardens Assistant, you'll work to maintain the beauty of plants, outdoor grounds, and trees in the garden of the stunning Gilpin Hotel and estate.


You'll perform a range of general garden and maintenance tasks including designing, producing, renewing and preserving our stunning outside spaces.

You may work on grounds projects from time to time, as well as supporting the overall presentation of the garden and grounds including reactive and ongoing maintenance.

Above all else, you will work to create garden environments that are enjoyable, safe and secure for all our guests.

To excel in this role, you'll be someone who:

  • Carries out a varied range of gardening duties including weeding, digging, edging, pruning, seed sowing, plant cultivation, bed preparation and planting.
  • Supports an agreed annual garden plan.
  • Develops existing planting schemes for the borders and shrubberies around the site as a part of the annual gardening plan. Submits lists of requirements to Head of Department to include tree and shrub replacement, seasonal bedding plants and other horticultural materials or machinery as required.
  • Works to schedules for seasonal maintenance to include lawn areas, shrubs, boarders, planters/hedges/trees, leaf and weed control.
  • Carries out comprehensive and regular watering in dry weather.
  • Ensures all the tools, garden equipment and machinery are correctly maintained and serviced, that they are kept in good and safe working order.
  • Works alongside senior garden staff to develop a guest garden trail.
  • Assists with the management of hot tubs and pool testing for PH levels and chlorine levels.
  • Secures buildings at the end of the day.
  • Understands that all staff within the team should be guest focused and contribute to an outstanding guest experience.
  • Works as a positive member of the garden and wider hotel team.
  • Provides support where needed to the management team with reactive maintenance and set up needs.
  • Assists with any other reasonable tasks as specified.
  • Ensures sound Health and Safety practices are being adhered to providing a safe working environment for everyone working or using the gardens.
  • Manages risk assessments of gardening operations.
  • Ensures the safe use of pesticides and other treatments in line with COSHH.
  • Highlights any concerns or failings on quality or safety, to the senior team.
To succeed in this role, you should be physically fit and able to manage small and heavy machinery.

You'll also be experienced in, or happy to learn, the management of livestock as you'll be responsible for our herd of Alpacas and Llamas.
