About UK Assessment & Qualifications:

We are responsible for the delivery of nearly 4 million examination results per annum, including A-Level, GCSE, BTEC and T-levels for students in UK and International centres.

Our in-house systems process every learner from registration to marking and certification, in a highly regulated business.

We currently operate a hybrid estate of predominantly bespoke systems, with an ongoing strategic transformation programme to migrate from on-prem to cloud based, cost effective, scalable, and resilient services.


The role:

As the Head of Accessibility (UX and UI), you will play a critical role in ensuring that our digital products and experiences are inclusive, accessible, and user centric.

You will lead a team of user researchers, UX designers, and UI developers, driving the accessibility and usability of our products to meet the needs of all users, including those with disabilities.

This position requires a deep understanding of user research methodologies, UX/UI design principles, and accessibility standards.

Responsibilities:


Leadership and Strategy:


  • Lead on Accessibility across School Qualifications, developing an Accessibility strategy for paperbased and digital products and services.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive user research strategy to inform product development decisions and improve user experience.
  • Define and champion accessibility standards and best practices across the organization, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams, including product managers, engineers, and designers, to integrate user research findings and accessibility considerations into product development processes.

Accessibility:


  • Develop a vision and policy for Accessibility across School qualifications and products.
  • Set up governance, roles, and responsibilities for Accessibility implementation, leading a group of Accessibility accountable leads.
  • Lead and establish an Accessibility Oversight Board for School Qualifications.
  • Set up a programme of Accessibility initiatives and projects to facilitate strategy execution.
  • Define and approve performance metrics and risk management framework for Accessibility.
  • Facilitate the establishment of centralised Accessibility training, tools and support for School Qualifications.

User Research and Testing:


  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative user research studies to identify user needs, pain points, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute usability testing, accessibility testing, and user interviews to gather insights and validate design decisions.
  • Analyse and synthesize research data to generate actionable recommendations and drive iterative improvements to the user experience.

UX/UI Design and Prototyping:


  • Lead the UX/UI design process, collaborating with designers and developers to create accessible and intuitive user interfaces.
  • Create wireframes, interactive prototypes, and design specifications to communicate design concepts and interactions effectively.

Team Management and Development:


  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to a team of user researchers, UX designers, and UI developers, fostering their growth and development.
  • Define clear objectives, priorities, and performance metrics for the team, monitoring progress and ensuring highquality deliverables.
  • Foster a culture of usercentric design, collaboration, and continuous learning within the team and across the organization.
  • Lead across School Qualifications on accessibility, building strong collaborative working relationships with key internal stakeholders.

Qualifications:


  • Desirable
  • Relevant qualification in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Design, or a related field.
  • Significant experience in user researc
