About Us

Newham will offer you a unique working environment within one of the fastest growing, youngest and most diverse boroughs in the country.

We are home to international districts like the Royal Docks (the new location for the Mayor of London's City Hall) and Stratford (where the London Legacy Development Corporation's planning powers will shortly be returning to the borough).

These areas amongst other parts of the borough are experiencing significant and exciting development.

Newham Council is ambitious and has adopted a range of corporate priorities which at the core focus on the well-being of our residents.

This includes the Building a Fairer Newham Corporate Plan including focus on community wealth building initiatives, tackling the housing crisis, inequality and racial disproportionality and achieving tangible outcomes in tackling the borough's declared Climate Emergency through our new Just Transition Plan.

Alongside these corporate priorities, the Planning Service is integral to the delivery and growth of c.2800 new homes targeted per year, 31 Strategic Sites, an Enterprise Zone, Opportunity Area Planning Framework, large scale and distinctive employment-generating schemes, and major infrastructure projects underway.

Alongside delivering the current Local Plan, the policy team is in the midst of producing a new Local Plan - starting the process of shaping the borough for the next 15 years.

The production of the new Local Plan is a corporate priority for the administration, who are focussed on using planning policy innovatively to deliver for Newham residents.

Newham offers many career-defining opportunities to work at pace, at scale, and on innovative responses to complex issues.

We are evolving in how we deliver services to our residents and businesses, and we benefit from a hybrid approach to working (ie a mix of office based and home working).

Newham has a flexible working policy and we are open to considering proposals as to the exact pattern of work, such that hours can be arranged around you and your family's needs, as well as our business needs.

We also have various benefits such as the Local Authority pension scheme, Newham rewards and discounts, employee assistance and wellbeing programme, access to online learning and development resources, and a cycle to work scheme.

About The Job

As a Planner within Newham you will contribute to the delivery of an efficient and effective Development Management service for the borough, including engagement with developers and other key stakeholders in enabling the delivery of quality developments within a robust planning policy framework.

The post is career graded, with appointment to a particular grade, and progression between grades dependent on experience and performance.

Planners are graded SC6 to SO2 whilst Senior Planners are graded PO1 to PO3.

The complexity of planning work that you will do and the nature of your other roles and responsibilities such as training and mentorship or service projects will depend on your experience levels and the grade you are appointed.

About You

We are looking for individuals with in-depth planning knowledge and extensive Development Management experience to represent the borough at a Senior Planner level or recent graduates and planners who are in the earlier stages of their planning career.

You should be self motivated, enthusiastic, able to work as part of a team and have the ability to work at pace and under pressure in a positive and solutions led manner whilst supporting others in their own work.

You should be able to independently and effectively manage tasks and responsibilities to drive forward projects individually and as part of a team; successfully negotiate outcomes with our residents and developers and be confident in providing technical and procedural advice.

You will be confident in tackling new challenges and flexible in your approach to your work to adapt and meet the needs of the service.
