This is an exciting time for the NHS in Cornwall, with investment that will fund the development of a new Electronic Patient Record at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust.

This will be the biggest investment and transformation in the digital technology, that supports our patient care, for more than 30 years.

Our new EPR will touch the lives of staff, patients and partner organisations across Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and beyond.

Our services will be supported by a software system that is modern, flexible, and able to support the ongoing health care needs of our population.

A key part of the programme will be the transformation of reporting methods, information provision and business intelligence extracted from the new system.

To support this, we are developing new posts in our vital, award winning, Information and Business Intelligence (BI) service. You could play a crucial part in our journey to deliver brilliant healthcare services across Cornwall.


The Information and Business Intelligence team have a direct and tangible link to the high quality of patient care and patient safety delivered across the Trust, providing key reporting/BI solutions.


The main purpose of this role is to take a lead role in reporting/information work streams during the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) implementation.

This will encompass being responsible for project managing the reporting elements of the wider project, ensuring reporting from the EPR complies with the national information guidelines, updating Data Collection Worksheets, lead on implementing quality checks and producing data quality reports.

The post holder will also be responsible for cascading specialist knowledge and understanding of the new system, into the wider Information and BI team.

We are a hard-working, friendly, and innovative team, who have won multiple awards for our analytical tools and developments.

Our team support multiple elements of hospital business, utilising data from across the organisation to underpin evidence-based decision making and presenting this in our in-house developed Business Intelligence solution, RADAR.

Transformation of the way the team works will go alongside the implementation of the EPR, as we become accustomed to developing and deploying reporting solutions both within and external to the EPR, utilising a broad range of analytical tools.

This post, and those that report to it, will enable us to continue to support the growing information and intelligence requirements of our organisation, underpinning clinical and operational decision making, operational delivery and performance monitoring.

This post will form an integral part of the existing Information and Business Intelligence management structure.

Key elements of the post include:

  • The information specialist supports the development of services within the information team, with particular respect to taking a lead role in reporting/information work streams during the planning, design and implementation of the new EPR system. They will be responsible for project managing the reporting elements of the wider project and overseeing and contributing to the day-to-day tasks required during such an implementation.
  • They will ensure the requirements for internal and external reporting are fully considered during planning and implementation phases, with particular attention to ensuring compliance with national information guidelines such as; the NHS data dictionary or Information Standard Notices (ISNs), and especially for those systems producing data feeds for Commissioning Data Sets and information support to PbR/HRGs.
  • The role will support the strategic direction of the Trust by providing highly specialised knowledge and understanding of NHS information policies or data definitions as well as advice on how these should be implemented locally. They will also provide advice relating to Trust variants in recording practices, impacting on local data flows, thereby enabling the production of robust information and indepth analysis.
  • The post holder will provide leadership within the information team; direction and advice as required, investigating and solving complex queries of a technical (software packages) or Healthcare information related nature, responsible for training relevant staff in reporting from the EPR, reports accessed via RADAR (the department's inhouse developed BI tool) and the production of highly complex information reports.
