Finance Business Partner based in Central Manchester

Purpose of role


To provide meaningful and insightful financial analysis, reviewing and challenging and to provide accurate and timely financial information as part of the budget, forecast and actual reporting process.

To support the line Directors and managers of the business by assisting them to make operational decisions by giving them full knowledge of the financial consequences.

Key accountabilities

  • Produce accurate management accounts and financial information in a timely manner. This will include all areas of the P & L, Balance Sheet, Cashflow and CAPEX information.
  • Supporting Annual Business Plan and Forecasting process, providing insightful analysis and commentary.
  • Develop strong stakeholder relationships through a deep understanding of the Business and becoming a 'trusted advisor' to nonfinance stakeholders
  • Assist in the development and delivery of the business financial initiatives and management actions. Report periodically on their performance against budget and forecast.
  • Provide timely reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist and liaise with other Finance Business Partners and Financial Control team in the reporting of financial information where appropriate.
  • Support on any key projects that drive strategic change within the business where financial analysis/ reporting is required.
  • Work to continuously improve current processes and adapt to evolving requirements and demands
  • Liaise and provide Auditors with any necessary information as and when required
  • Support and collaborate with DfT/DOHL and other TOCs where required
  • Undertake ad hoc requests and projects as required

Qualifications and memberships

  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent
  • Qualified accountant (i.e., CIMA/ ACA /ACCA) or equivalent preferable

Job specific knowledge and skills

  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Proven ability to assimilate, understand and provide insight on key financial information
  • Must be well organised, an effective communicator, both written and oral, and possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience of partnering with and supporting stakeholders across the business
  • Driving process and systems efficiencies through continuous improvement
  • Ability to work to and manage deadlines and manage priorities
  • Good relationship building skills at all levels
  • Excellent team working skills including the ability to contribute proactively and supportively to the delivery of team initiatives.
  • Working in a culture of continuous Improvement
  • The ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines

Relevant experience

  • Experience of the provision and analysis of accurate, timely financial information and the ability to influence senior management.
  • Experience of advising on reported results and making recommendations for corrective action and providing proactive support for initiative
  • Experience of managing, delivering, and supporting Financial Plans
  • Proven track record of providing value add insight and recommendations
  • SAP BPC experience would be useful but not essential
  • Experience within Rail would be useful but not essential
