General Manager

We are looking for a professional, confident and effective General Manager to take the lead at the Liverpool Athenaeum, a magnificent and historic private members' Club, an iconic institution commonly referred to as 'Liverpool's Best Kept Secret' and a 'HiddenGem'.

Your purpose will be to assist the Club to evolve and grow by entering new markets whilst ensuring that the existing membership are catered for.


In this role, we are seeking:

The Club comprises:

  • The Newsroom, a large stately room with opulent décor where historically the broadsheets would be read by Liverpool's leading citizens, and meetings and conversations vitally important to the city of Liverpool would take place and ideas and information couldbe exchanged.
  • A unique Library, established in 1800, holds numerous treasured and rare books including the Roscoe Collection, Blanco White Collection and the Montserrat The Athenaeum Library is the largest independent library outside of London.
  • A beautiful Restaurant on the top floor, serving meals to the Members and their guests on a daily basis but also used for events.
In this role, you will be a key influential figure in the future of the Athenaeum.

You will need to be highly visible within the club and must be able to deliver first-rate services, delivering on the operational plan from the newly developed strategic objectivesproduced by the Board.

The General Manager must display strong leadership skills, engaging with and motivating the team to perform at a high-end level.

You will be tactful, and have the ability to step in, take stock on the current position of the businessand work to ensure that a number of key aspects of the business are enhanced and developed.


These may include:

  • Attracting new members
  • Reviewing and improving the website and social media activity
  • Networking to connect the club with the local business community
  • Enhancing the events offering
  • The system of budgeting and reporting to the Board
Salary & Benefits
£45,000-50,000 per annum
Skills, Experience & Qualities

  • Successful experience with membership organisation management, including event management in a highend setting
  • Business development experience within a consumer facing environment
  • Exceptional people management skills: able to effectively manage and motivate small teams and bring about a cohesive, united working environment
  • Confident and energetic approach to work; able to implement durable change
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills, diplomatic and comfortable dealing with patrons from all backgrounds.
  • Excel at building and developing customer relationships to encourage high retention levels
  • Strategic and financially astute; comfortable with profit and loss accountability
  • Have a high level of confidence and resilience, able to cope with unexpected issues or conflicts in a calm and professional manner
  • Have a passion for Liverpool and the City Region

Responsibilities:

A full job specification is available, but in essence, the responsibilities are around;

  • Leading the efficient running of the Athenaeum
  • Providing leadership and development for the Athenaeum staff
  • Leading the team and promoting high levels of employee engagement.
  • Ensuring maximum cooperation and teamwork
  • Lead in the Business planning process, including developing and rolling out the Club's Business Plan
  • Attend Governing Board meetings and actively participate.
  • Provide comprehensive operational updates for the Board members, in a number of new areas of the business currently not reported on
  • To develop a culture of continual improvement and champion innovation
  • Develop relationships with Clubs within the reciprocal Club network both within the UK and internationally.
  • To lead the annual budget process, in partnership with the Honorary Treasurer. Ensure the Club operates with appropriate due diligence and that audit and risk management processes are in place
