Fellows will operate on a rota separate to the core medical staff, though would be expected to lead the acute medical take as the Departmental Medical Registrar in the event of any absences or rota gaps.


The post holder will work under direct supervision of the Acute Medicine service consultants and their educational supervisor in Acute Medical Unit, UCLH.

The post holder will collaborate with clinical academics, other research fellows, research nurses, other clinical staff. Each post holder will be allocated a clinical and research supervisor.

Department of Acute Medicine (Acute Medical Unit)


The Acute Medical Unit has undergone a major reconfiguration in service for acute medical admissions with increased consultant input within the initial 24-48 hours following admission, providing a consultant-led service for 12-hours a day, 7-days a week.


The Emergency Ambulatory Care Unit (AECU) and Emergency Day Unit which is attached to Emergency Department but operates on a separate rota, including a Consultant of the day and the Nurse Consultant in Acute Care.

All referrals from primary care are received by the ambulatory care consultant and are triaged to admission, ambulatory care or admission avoidance clinic.

An in-reaching model into the Emergency Department is operated to maximize admission avoidance processes. Slots are available for admission avoidance; early discharge and ward follow up.

These posts(up to 6)offer specialist experience in acute medicine combined with substantial research, quality improvement and educational opportunities.

The objective is to give fellows protected time and academic mentorship to pursue research in line with their own interests and departmental.

The rota operates over a 6-week cycle, which includes 3 weeks in Acute Medicine (with OOH enhancements). These posts are fixed-term contracts of 12 months in the first instance with a start date March 2023. We will support less-than-full-time working.

This post is not formally approved for training.

However, fellows will be able to take advantage of opportunities arising during clinical work to have their competencies logged on the NHS e-portfolio which may be recognised in future ARCPs.
