Description

We are looking for two fixed term posts covering GI pathology, gynaecological pathology and one other specialty to include either uropathology, cytopathology, thoracic/lung pathology or dermatology.


The Department has been pivotal in the regional amalgamation of molecular pathology work with our Molecular Pathology Lead, Dr Kalnisha Naidoo, leading the Genomics Lab Hut (GLH).

There is strong emphasis in engagement with molecular pathology within the the Department and academic/research opportunities arising from this area.


If desired, there will be opportunities for cross-site working, both at our new start of the art centralised pathology hut which is due to open in Blackfriars, and at our sister site, the Princess Royal Hospital in Orpington, We are in the process of introducing digital pathology, which will allow for the introduction of hybrid working in the near future.


This is an excellent opportunity to join the department of Histopathology at King's College Hospital Denmark Hill, which is continuously expanding to support other DGH hospitals.

The role is a 6 month fixed term contract Consultant post to replace a recently retired Consultant colleague.


This post will require the post holder to play an active role in the integration and development of the diagnostic repertoire and quality of the department whilst having a significant commitment to the research and training of junior staff.


Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post.

If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES1. Together with the other members of consultant staff, to develop and provide a high quality pathology service.

This includes all aspects of provision and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department especially participating in disease specific discussions within the MDT Meetings.


  • Responsible also for covering colleague's periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  • Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Responsible for clinic commitments (as per subspecialty requirement).
  • Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  • Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
  • Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the department's Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
  • Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  • Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  • Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
