The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) offers hybrid working - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home.

UKHSA have office locations across the UK.


This role can be based at one of our UKHSA offices/locations (Leeds, Manchester, Totnes, London, Horsham, Cardiff, Bristol, Nottingham, Harlow, Liverpool, Fareham, Gloucester, Newcastle and Birmingham) with opportunities for an element of working from home.

The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business needs and in line with departmental policy.

Responsibilities section:


As the Senior Epidemiologist Scientist your main responsibilities will include:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • identify surveillance needs and sampling strategy within given lead areas plus 'horizonscanning'.
- manage delivery of agreed work programme: including timely reporting to stakeholders
- oversee questionnaire design and study database development
- evaluate acute response to incidents and outbreak and use to improve standards and consistency across the team.
- analyse datasets with appropriate methodology to answer research questions and translate results into public health action.
- publish and present scientific papers on public health surveillance, outbreaks and infectious disease control in collaboration with health, public health, academic and other partners.
- teach colleagues and stakeholders on surveillance and epidemiology and support ongoing training activities within the department.

Essential Criteria:


We are looking for an exceptional Senior Epidemiologist
It is important through your CV and Statement of Suitability of 500 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential
- analyse and use a range of relevant, credible information from internal and external sources to support decisions, communicating in the most appropriate style
- make it clear to all team members that bullying, harassment and discrimination are unacceptable
- significant relevant experience working in a business support role, including experience of monitoring budgets and spend, using procurement processes
- ability to draft briefing papers and correspondence at a senior level
- ability to deal with complex matters and difficult situations, requiring persuasion and influence
- ability to plan for long and short-term and adjust plans and resource to meet requirements
- understanding or working knowledge of the public sector (and healthcare environments) (A)
- educated to graduate degree level/NVQ6 level or equivalent experience
- competent in ensuring the ordering of goods and services is in accordance with Civil Service policies and procedures and an understanding of procurement and business development processes
- you actively encourage and provide opportunities for others to share ideas and contributions
- you think ahead to anticipate, identify and address any risks or problems before they occur
- you are confident to lead a team and can effectively manage team dynamics to drive forward a shared goal
- experience of hosting/managing meetings


Desirable
- experience working in a public-sector organisation
- experience of managing and motivating a team and reviewing performance of individuals
- experience of managing projects and reporting risk
- able to successfully operate in a politically sensitive environment
- knowledge of project principles, techniques and tools
- ability to use digital tools and understand where they can best be deployed
