SPECIFIC DUTIES The post holder must be able to plan & prioritise their own workload when required and assist in ensuring students within ultrasound receive adequate training within the department & where appropriate be involved in the supervision and clinical training of students, other qualified staff & assistants.

They must have good communication skills, being able to communicate sensitive information to a broad range of patients so they understand the implications of the findings & where possible they must be able to reassure the patient.

When having to impart difficult information empathy & understanding is essential.

It is important that they have the expert clinical knowledge & skills to carry out appropriate ultrasound examinations; they must also be able to make a clinical judgement based on assessing and interpreting the ultrasound findings, report on their findings, making a diagnosis, where possible.


Write reports in a clear concise manner & communicate these findings to colleagues to ensure the patient receives appropriate treatment.

The post holder must be able to adapt their technique when necessary for patients to ensure they provide a high quality service and similar standard of care for all patients.

Assist in maintaining accurate records to include ensuring that the appointment system and computerised/paper based patient records are kept up to date also ensuring patient confidentiality is maintained.

Keep the Principal Sonographer and / or Assistant Principal Sonographer informed of the effectiveness of their area of responsibility and propose changes to these or the departmental protocols when necessary to pre-empt any foreseeable problems.


Ensure they are aware of departmental procedures and protocols but when necessary be able to use their own initiative and act independently for the good of the patient.

They must also be aware of Trust wide policies relating to both themselves and the department and of all QA & Health & Safety policies relevant to the department.

Responsible for ensuring the safe use of equipment within the area they are working, ensuring the safety of themselves, colleagues and patients.

You have a responsibility to consider yourself and anyone else that would be affected by the things you do, or dont do, that you should have while at work.


You are responsible for informing your manager of any health & safety concerns you identify and for completing an adverse event form for any accidents, incidents or near misses that happen to you or that you are aware of to reduce injuries or loss.

They must report any hazards, accidents or incidents that occur to the appropriate person.

The post holder is responsible for maintaining their own professional development and they should partake and show evidence of, where possible CPD, research, audit & staff appraisal.

Ensure they have the opportunity for personal professional development and training when required.


They must maintain high standards of professionalism within the department and know they are accountable for their own professional conduct and actions; this includes responsibility for reporting their own work.

Be aware of and understand the legal responsibilities in relation to Trust policies and procedures.
