There is an exciting opportunity at Guys and St Thomas to Join the Trust as a substance misuse Nursing Assistant within the Addictions Care Team (ACT).


The ACT provides specialist substance misuse interventions for patients admitted to Guys and St Thomas' who are affected by substance misuse.

This includes patients admitted to the newly established Addictions Clinical Care Suite who require medically assisted withdrawal / stabilisation from drugs and / or alcohol.


The role of substance misuse Nursing Assistant is open to applicants who have experience of providing care for people who have been affected by substance misuse utilizing a trauma informed approach and those who have experience of delivering psychosocial interventions.


The substance misuse Nursing Assistant will work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary Team to ensure the holistic care needs of patient are met.

Main duties of the job

To work supervised under qualified staff and to provide support in the delivery of quality care for patients.

To provide a full range of support functions in a ward/department.

This will include undertaking personal care duties for patients, clerical duties and reporting patient conditions to qualified staff.


Ensuring the safety and well being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.

You will be given the opportunity to work as part of a friendly team with specialist nurses and MDT, where you will develop your skills in addictions.

The Addictions Clinical Care Suite provides a range of inpatient health services for adults within the trust, requiring medically assisted withdrawal / stabilization from drugs and / or alcohol.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide excellent customer care skills to ensure patients come first.
  • Attend to the activities of daily living needs of patients, under the supervision and direction of a qualified nurse, to ensure that patients receive care appropriate to their needs.
  • To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
  • To ensure that patients' receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
  • Recognize and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
  • In accordance with the individual care plan, support patients to meet their nutritional needs by:
  • Assisting patients in menu selection, liaising with the team nurse regarding special diets, being sensitive to cultural requirements where appropriate.
  • Serving patients' meals and beverages and assisting less able patients to eat and drink.
  • To maintain/monitor food and fluid intake.
  • In accordance with the individual care plan, support patients to meet their personal hygiene and dressing needs by assisting patients with dressing, washing and shaving.
  • Assist patients to the toilet and give bedpans and commodes as needed.
  • To facilitate patients to meet their own hygiene needs.
  • Ensuring that all bed areas are prepared to an agreed standard prior to the patient's admission.
  • Ensuring the cleanliness of rooms and bed areas, responsible for the ongoing cleanliness of the rooms including the cleaning of spilt body fluids.
  • Report immediately to the Nurse in Charge any observed change in a patient's condition or any concern expressed by a patient about nursing or medical treatment to maintain patient safety and improve communication
  • Ensure own actions help to maintain quality
  • Undertake routine assessment tasks related to the individual's health and wellbeing
  • Assist in delivering programme of care to meet individual's health and wellbeing needs
  • Undertake clinical procedures relevant to the area as defined by Trust protocol and procedures
  • Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care
