Job summary:

The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:
Positioning the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement

Driving innovations that change lives and sustain economic growth

Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services

R&D funding


For 2023, our priorities are:


Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.


Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs - including by delivering world-class physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.


Put our public services - including the NHS and schools - at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of in-house STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.


Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.


Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our pro-innovation approach to regulating AI.

Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

Job description:


  • The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) delivers the UK government's Life Sciences Vision. We work to make the UK one of the best places in the world for life sciences companies to thrive, creating economic opportunities and jobs across the country, and improving health outcomes for the UK population.   • You would be part of our Innovation and Growth team. You would work with colleagues across government to ensure that the UK has a competitive and innovative regulatory system for health innovation. An immediate priority will be collaborating across government to support medical devices regulatory reform, and to put into action the recommendations of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser's life sciences review into regulation for innovation.
  • Joining OLS offers an opportunity to contribute to policy areas of significant ministerial, parliamentary and public interest, with realworld effects in public health and economic growth

Person specification:


Work on policy development, with a focus on: creative solutions to challenging problems; coherence of message; and real-world effects, including shaping and oversight of detailed delivery plans.

Provide high-quality advice, briefings, speeches, correspondence, and Parliamentary Questions to ministers and senior officials.


Influence and negotiate regulatory policy for medicines and medical devices across government to ensure OLS objectives are achieved and represented at the highest levels of government.


Establish and maintain relationships across government, with academics and with industry, to support cross-government work to deliver on the Life Sciences Vision commitments.
