At Northern, we are dedicated to developing and delivering a better rail service in the North of England, by employing driven and motivated people to improve what we do on a daily basis.

We have an exciting opportunity for a
Graduate to join our Customer & Commercial function.


Northerns Graduate Management Scheme is a 24 month programme, designed to give you a unique insight into the Rail industry.

During the programme you will work predominantly across one business function, but also get the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills in other business functions too.

The scheme will give you the change to gain highly valuable work experience and lifelong skills - helping you work towards becoming a great leader of the future.


You will have a unique chance to become a valued contributor to the business and its continued growth and development; as well as gain a strong understanding of the Rail industry.

As part of the scheme, you'll also be onboarded onto a Management course; so not only will you have on the job experience and working on various workplace project, you'll also obtain a qualification in Management.


About the Placement


The Customer & Commercial function is ultimately responsible for ensuring Northern is a trusted and respected Brand - striving to improve every part Northerns stations, trains, and services for our customers.

Customer focuses on excellence in customer experience; from buying a ticket, right though to our stations and trains.

Commercial focus is on using insight to shape marketing, fares, revenue protection and retailing strategy, enabling Northern to maximise customer demand and support economic growth in the North.


In this placement you will gain experience across the entire Customer & Commercial division, with additional broader experience within the wider business / industry.

You'll get a mix of learning and job shadowing, alongside ownership and delivery of key business projects.

You will split your time on the placement in the following areas:


  • Sales & Marketing
  • Commercial Development
  • Retail operations
  • Customer Experience
  • Property
  • Wider Northern business.

About You


As an ambitious and highly motivated individual, you have an appetite to learn and capacity to take ownership of everything you do.

You'll demonstrate the ability to be innovative and seek ways to improve what you do and how its done. You'll have a natural interest in people, with experience of working and engaging with people.

With your excellent written and verbal communications skills, you'll have the ability to effortless communicate with a wide variety of people.

You'll also be a confident person, with the ability to influence and challenge those around you.

You should also be able to demonstrate the following:


  • Be driven; demonstrating determination to succeed.
  • A passion for building relationships with a wide variety of people from all varying levels.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A global attitude for working in a multicultural environment.
  • Have a high performance and achievement mentality; whilst also being creative and innovative.
  • Strong planning and organising skills, including the ability to effectively prioritise workload
  • Be able to use MS Office.

It is also essential that you have:

  • Completed a 2:1 or higher Bachelor's degree or Master's degree.
  • Must have studied at a University in the North of England or live in the North of England.
