An excellent opportunity work as a demonstrator supporting the teaching team on the BSc Geology/Planetary Science with Astronomy programmes.

You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck students in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies.


We are specifically looking for 2 demonstrators for:

Scientific Computing and Data Modelling
This will be taught online on Wednesday 6-9pm.

Geophysics
This will be taught in person Thursday 6-9pm.

Both demonstrator roles will only be needed for 2 hours at a time, occasional online weekend support may be required.

  • A first degree in Earth or Planetary Science or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Experience in using a range of basic statistical techniques used in Earth and Planetary Science.
  • Awareness of the needs of parttime adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, to convey both simple and more complex information and academic concepts.
  • Commitment to working with diversity.
  • Organisation and administrative skills.
  • Experience using MATLAB software.
  • The ability able to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate and have the ability to support teaching.
  • A willingness to engage in reflective practice.

Remuneration:


Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £22.28 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6.
