Health Education England is funding Trainee Health Psychologists to explore the contribution and impact health psychology can make in supporting the NHS to achieve its workforce transformation and redesign goals.


The post is two year fixed term and designed to allow the trainee Health Psychologists' successful completion of the British Psychological Society's Stage 2 Training while employed by the NHS to undertake a programme of approved work.

Internal applicants currently employed by ESNEFT will be offered on a secondment basis only.

  • As part of a 2year training programme, to develop competencies in relation to Stage 2 Training in Health Psychology, including psychological interventions, research & development, teaching & training, consultancy and generic professional competencies to be eligible for HCPC registration as a Health Psychologist

Under supervision and in the context of work-based training:

  • Plan and implements bespoke, formulation-driven psychological interventions to support workforce redesign, empathetically, sensitively and independently, with a range of client groups/groups of clients, and evaluates the impact of such intervention.
  • Design and implement health psychology interventions for individuals, teams and groups in order to achieve behaviour change and workforce transformation, drawing upon appropriate evidencebased theoretical models and motivational skills
  • Contribute to local service development and strategic planning in relation to Health Psychology and workforce transformation programmes in accordance with local processes
  • Provide consultancy to a range of client groups e.g., communities and organisation
  • Assess and manage risk in consultation with supervisors.
  • Communicates complex and sensitive condition related information to managers.
  • Providing and receiving complex, sensitive or contentious information, where there are significant barriers to acceptance which need to be overcome using developed interpersonal and communication skills such as would be required when communicating in a hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere.
  • Works with and has ongoing communication with coordinating supervisor, workplace supervisor and National Training Director.
  • Seek guidance from and consultation with supervisor as required to support safe and effective practice.
  • Communicate effectively through written reports and/or verbal feedback.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, with NHS teams, workforce transformation leads, psychology services, organisational development teams, and other professional colleagues as appropriate.
  • Design and deliver formal training sessions on psychological aspects of behaviour change for multidisciplinary professionals and other groups as appropriate, ensuring effective delivery according to best practice. This includes evaluating and selecting available materials and producing and adapting them to meet programme design specifications, learning needs and objectives.
  • Participate in regular and ongoing professional supervision. Professional Stage 2 supervision will be with a Registered Health Psychologist (BPS approved Coordinating supervisor). Day to day workplace supervision will be with an appropriately qualified professional within the placement organisation
  • To contribute to service development
  • Manage complex and/or sensitive information with care and in accordance with information governance guidelines.
