Interim Benefits Assessment Officer - Revenues and Benefits

This opening assignment is for 2 months

An Enhanced DBS disclosure is listed as a requirement for this role.

  • Assess and determine all types and tenures of Housing and Council Tax Benefit claims, including reconsiderations, to ensure compliance with legislation, policy and procedures within agreed timescales.
  • Undertake all telephone, face to face and other enquiries as required, including the ability to signpost and promote other welfare benefits to ensure service performance outcomes and excellent customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure that all communication is undertaken accurately, clearly and quickly to the public and other persons affected by telephone, in writing and in person to ensure excellent customer satisfaction.
  • Contribute to the team's targets by processing a significant volume of work covering a wide range of cases from simple to complex with speed and a high degree of accuracy. To contribute to the clearance of claims and changes in circumstances within statutory time periods and minimising subsidy losses.
  • Maintain awareness of overpayment recovery procedures and instigate recovery from ongoing benefit, considering underlying entitlement, to ensure compliance with legislation and assist customers who are required to repay benefits.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to reducing fraud and error from entering the system, through identification and timely referral, thereby supporting Government policy to reduce Fraud and Error from entering the Benefit System.
  • Liaise, as required with other Government agencies, public and voluntary sector organizations, other departments and persons affected by Benefits. Provide advice and information whilst maintaining the Section's requirements for confidentiality, to maintain positive working relationships for delivering Cornwall Benefits Service outcomes.
  • Verify evidence and information supplied by claimants to ensure compliance with legislation and policy.
  • Respond to correspondence from claimants, landlords, Housing Associations, advice agencies, solicitors the benefits agency and internal departments to ensure that Benefits are put into payment in agreed timescales.
  • To support and assist other benefit officers through sharing of knowledge and flexibility of cover.

"Role Requirements" - to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:

  • GCSE A to C level including Mathematics and English or equivalent work related experience
  • IRRV Part / Technician member or other relevant qualification (desirable)
  • Ability to exercise satisfactory travel mobility in order to fulfil the obligations of the role
  • A detailed working knowledge of HB/CTB legislation, interpretation and practice such that the role holder is able to understand, explain and implement complex pieces of legislation within the structure of procedural arrangements
  • Experience of customer/public contact demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills across a range of media
  • Experience of accurately maintaining and interpreting personal and financial data demonstrated by experience of working in a benefits section or in an equivalent revenues/customer facing environment
  • Excellent administration skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritise workload in a pressurised, target
- driven organization, demonstrated by an experience of a performance management regime recognising contribution towards service plan performance targets
