Organisation EUROPEAN AND OVERSEAS BANKS

Job Posting 31-Jan-2024, 4:53:40 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation.

Each of its 4,000 people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

International Banks Supervision
We are the host regulators of the UK activities of firms headquartered in over 50 overseas jurisdictions. The firms we supervise include some of the world's highest profile investment firms, banks and custodians.

A distinctive aspect of our role is that the firms we supervise are branches or subsidiaries of multinational groups based abroad.

This often adds an element of complexity and restricts our legal powers, leading us to proactively coordinate our work with overseas regulators and thus rely more on influence in a number of situations in order to achieve our supervisory objectives.

Our broad remit involves dealing with individuals from a wide variety of countries and cultures, requiring us to rely on even greater powers of empathy than normal.

International Banks Supervision sits within the Authorisations, Reg Tech and International Supervision Directorate (ARTIS) and is formed of:

  • The new RegTech, Data and Innovation Division; and
  • The four divisions responsible for the supervision, as a host regulator, of the UK activities of banks, custodians and designated investment firms headquartered in over 50 overseas jurisdictions including some of the world's highest profile firms.
We believe in diversity.

We define diversity as both who we are (identity diversity, such as gender or ethnicity) and how we think (cognitive diversity).

We are actively seeking the benefits of having a range of backgrounds and characteristics in our teams.

Diverse teams are more inclined to consider novel ideas and challenge each other, enabling them to infer cause and effect and to solve problems better and thereby help us to better achieve our mission.

Diversity does not mean ticking boxes, it means ensuring we are best able to fulfil our mission of promoting the good of the people of the UK by maintaining financial stability.

We are seeking to fill vacancies across various teams within International Banks Supervision.

You will either be responsible for supervising a portfolio of category 2-4 firms, or responsible for one or more risk element(s) as part of a team supervising a category 1 firm.

Our teams cover a broad range of international jurisdictions with a mix of subsidiaries and branches, including some of the world's largest financial institutions and portfolios of firms with high levels of crystallised risk, affording opportunities to work on interesting cases, and build knowledge of creative use of supervisory tools.

A key part of our roles include developing our relationships with Home State Supervisors consistent with our approach to branch supervision.

Being part of the ARTIS directorate also provides opportunities to act as a member and contribute to relevant cross-firm networks and on thematic issues, and to work closely with colleagues from across the organisation to analyse and mitigate areas of risk.

Role Description

As a senior banking supervisor, you'll use your analytical and interpersonal skills to deliver assessments and understand any risks your firm(s) might pose, and make judgements and recommendations to reduce and mitigate risks to the PRA's objectives.

The role is varied, with no two days the same.

You'll spend time interacting with senior leaders across the UK and international financial firms and build an understanding of how they work, as well as sharing your findings with the wider internal team and senior stakeholders at the PRA.

When things don't look quite right, you'll investigate issues and dig deeper.

Everything you do will help to ensure our supervisory strategies to reduce and mitigate risks to the PRA's objectives are being implemented.

The mixture of high-profile work and complex issues means you'll have plenty of opportunities to develop both your technical and interpersonal skills.

We'll match you to a role that builds on your strengths. So instead of having specific experience, you'll need to be curious, ready to learn and keen to share ideas. You'll enjoy analysing problems and be open to discussing and debating issues, to inform and make good judgements. And with plenty of self-motivation and initiative, you'll be able to set your own targets and work to deadlines. Importantly, you'll have the ability to manage different stakeholders and influence both people and decisions.
