An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Director of Nursing for Cancer to support the delivery of excellent cancer nursing across LUHFT.


The post holder will work closely with the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer, Lead Cancer Nurse and Cancer management team to provide strategic direction to deliver high quality and safe clinical services within required national and local standards.


They will be required to demonstrate the effective management of teams and have experience of using appraisal and accountability frameworks to support this.

They will support the development of an open and engaging culture for patients and staff that encourages excellence in clinical practice, facilitates team working and multi professional care delivery that adheres to Trust values and behaviours.

The post holder will be expected to function at a senior level within the Cancer Services Team, proactively leading and providing solutions to resolve complex issues, in accordance with professional standards,
agreed Trust objectives, targets, quality standards and resource constraints.


The post holder will have recent clinical experience within a cancer service and have managerial experience in leading professional teams, and will possess leadership skills to deal competently with complex issues in ensuring that professional standards and policy are upheld implemented and performance managed.


The Assistant Director of Nursing will improve the quality of health care provision for patients with cancer and their families throughout the cancer and palliative care journey by working with patients and staff, in representing nursing in strategic national, local and regional planning groups for cancer services.

Reporting to the Director of Nursing for Corporate Services, the post holder is expected to function at a very senior level within the Corporate Team, proactively leading and providing solutions to resolve complex issues, in accordance with professional standards, agreed Trust objectives, targets, quality standards and resource constraints.

The post holder will have

managerial experience in leading professional teams, and will possess leadership skills to deal competently with complex issues in ensuring that professional standards and policy are upheld, implemented and performance managed.


Working closely with other members of the Corporate Cancer Services Team, the post holder will lead the implementation of patient centred clinical operational strategy and plans for the nursing/AHP professions, championing nursing/AHP quality standards, under the direction of the Associate Director of Nursing for Corporate Services, ensuring that systems and processes are in place to comply with relevant legislation and governance requirements, linking with professional bodies, and others such as commissioners a bout service developments, contracts and clinical care pathways whilst utilising the expertise and skills of the wider team.


As a member of the Corporate Cancer Services Team, the post holder will significantly contribute to strategic direction and policy setting for the Trust, forming an essential communications link between the Divisions, Care Groups, the nursing/AHP professions, and other external organisations, demonstrating a coaching style of leadership in ensuring that clinical, staff and stakeholder engagement is reflected in the decision-making process.
