Job summary:

What does the future of AI and cross-modal autonomous technologies look like?
Would you like to take the incredible and make them part of everyday life?

If so, we have the fantastic opportunity to join the Department for Transport as our Head of AI and Cross-Modal Autonomous Technologies and would like you to apply

Job description:

AI and cross-modal autonomy can encompass so many different aspects of our everyday life and it is certainly where we are heading in the not too distant future.

From driverless cars to drones for logistics to carry out deliveries, AI and cross-modal autonomous technologies will fundamentally change how we move around the UK.

As the Department for Transport's science and technology expert in AI and cross-modal autonomy, you will be leading a research portfolio to drive forwards the pace of technological development and adoption into the transport network.

This may include commissioning and leading specific research packages with world class experts in academia to develop our understanding of AI and cross-modal autonomous technologies, as well as leading other researchers seconded into the department to further enhance technology exploitation across transport modes.

You will also be the Departments primary lead for AI and cross-modal autonomous technologies working across government departments and with international partners, developing technology strategies specific for the UKs transport network.

Of course, an essential component for transport networks of the future is our use of technology and understanding how we can best embed the very latest advances to improve transport for everyone.

The Emerging Technologies team is a core capability for our Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) delivering against their vision for R&D across the department, where our deep technical experts seek to understand the latest technological opportunities, using our technical and scientific expertise to work with colleagues across the department to embed the latest research into our critical national infrastructure and long-term policy development.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the development and delivery of the Departments technology strategy for AI and cross-modal autonomous technologies
  • Leading the development and delivery of the Departments central R&D portfolio for AI and crossmodal autonomous technologies
  • Representing the Department in cross Whitehall programmes of work and research activities in AI and crossmodal autonomous technologies, especially as the Departmental link to the Office for Artificial Intelligence
  • Being the Departmental deep technical expert and lead for AI and crossmodal autonomous technologies research activities
  • Leading the engagement and communication with policy professionals across the department, translating complex S&T for nonS&T audiences
  • Leading briefings for CSA, senior officials and Ministers on AI and crossmodal autonomous technologies and related activities to influence thought leadership at the highest levels.
Please refer to the role profile attached for more information.

Person specification:

About You
It is essential that you hold a postgraduate qualification, or undergraduate degree along with further relevant experience:
You will also need relevant experience including leading and delivering complex projects, technology development and implementation, or software development in one of the following, or another related STEM area:

  • Machine learning and software integration,
  • Embedded systems engineer,
  • Computer vision and deep learning
  • Autonomous systems development and delivery

We are looking for a dynamic self-starter who embraces challenges, who will thrive in a working environment centred around tech and will want to push boundaries.

You will lead by example, with the technical credibility to understand the complex science and technology of AI and cross-modal autonomy, and an ability to translate and communicate that clearly to non-technical audiences.

In addition, experience of working with or within government and/or research and development programmes, or experience of interfacing between R&D and government and/or policy professionals further lend itself to area of skill and experience we are looking for.
