School Animal Care / Land Based Technician / Tutor

Bettws Lifehouse, an independent Special School, has an exciting Animal Care / Land based Technician / Tutor opportunity. The position will be based at our Kingsland Grange site in Shrewsbury.

This position is based across the school and the duties will include:

  • Ensure animal welfare and husbandry is given the highest priority at all times taking advice from colleagues and/or veterinary surgeons as necessary.
  • Carry out animal routines ensuring animals are fed, watered, cleaned and provided with the highest standard of care.
  • Optimise the learning opportunities for horticulture and horticulture therapy across the school.
  • Handle and move animals safely.
  • Work with the Animal Care and Land based teaching & support staff to optimise the outdoor learning opportunities.
  • Work with the mental Health and wellbeing team to provide therapeutic opportunities for identified pupils
  • Ensure equipment, materials & learning environments are tidy, safe, hygienic & orderly.
  • Maintain records and inventories as necessary.
  • Administer medicines and carry out animal first aid as necessary.
  • Work with the animal care and Land based teachers, instructors, and other staff to facilitate student access as requested.
  • Support other staff with pupils during practical sessions to ensure tasks are carried out safely and in line with the school protocols.
  • Maintain and improve the aesthetics of the outdoor learning spaces including the grounds and woodland area.
  • Participate in meetings and undertake staff development as necessary.
  • Maintain the highest standards of health and safety ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to and risk and COSHH assessments are applied as necessary.
  • Maintain effective and professional working relations with all stakeholders.
  • Provide cover for absent colleagues as necessary.
  • Participate in school events for example competitions, information events, open days, awards ceremonies and meetings with employers if required.

Key Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Previous experience in an outdoor learning environment or relevant skills experience
  • UK Driving licence
  • Qualifications in Animal Care / Land based (Preferred, potential for access to further qualifications & Training)

Salary:
£24,000.00-£27,000.00 per year
