You will play a part in the exciting growth and development of the College's Technical Services offering. You will be responsible for monitoring our workshops - acting as the key out-of-hours contact for fellow students.

You'll be expected to undertake 1-3 x 5-hour shifts (evenings and/or weekends) each week during teaching weeks. The Student Associate pay rate will be £16.72/hr


Our Student Associates are an intrinsic part of the Technical Services team, allowing for longer operating hours and greater resource support in low-risk areas.

As a result, you'll be helping to facilitate learning, creating, research and knowledge exchange amongst your peers.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the key outofhours monitor in the project spaces, ensuring the effective provision and availability of equipment and project areas
  • Acting as a knowledgeable ambassador for Technical Services and pointing users to our online and physical resources
  • Housekeeping and stock replenishment in project spaces

Student Associates will be required to:

Contribute as part of a technical support team in the effective provision and availability of equipment and project areas in order to facilitate student learning, research and knowledge exchange activities.

Act as an out of hours point of contact in technical project spaces by:

  • welcoming users into technical areas,
- monitoring general use of making space by pre-inducted users,
- assisting with enquiries and being polite, friendly and helpful.

Act as a knowledgeable ambassador for Technical Services by providing information to students on accessing College technical resources.

General

  • Provide daytoday support in the College's technical project areas, by monitoring the use of these low risk facilities and signposting preinducted users.
  • Commit to an agreed workload, including evenings and weekends in support of a making space.
  • Comply with all Royal College of Art policies and procedures.
  • Undertake other duties consistent with the role as required and in agreement with the Lead Technician or the Technical Services Manager.
  • Provide support to the technical team during key periods of events and exhibitions as required, including the handling, transportation and installation of art works and signage.
Customer Service

  • Answer general questions and direct students to appropriate facilities, while helping to create a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Provide orientation of facilities and support students in the understanding of defined rules and protocols within the space, including availability of services.
  • Monitor and record occupancy by individual and/or groups of users
  • Participate in staff meetings and provide verbal feedback on monitored areas.
  • Help with signage, notice boards and other material as directed by the specialist technical staff.
Housekeeping and stock replenishment

  • Receive, unpack and check deliveries. Restock consumables from storage areas and keep areas tidy.
  • Check signage, rules and protocol posters, first aid boxes, access routes and bench areas.
  • Monitor functionality of equipment.
Health and safety

  • Monitor activity in low risk areas and reinforce instructions in the area to facilitate a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Use the established reporting mechanisms to record observations and incidents relating to specific users or equipment (e.g. accidents, inappropriate social behaviour, violations of rules, safety conditions, breakages, wear and tear).
  • Liaise with RCA staff on duty.
