Background


The Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group is part of the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, School of Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

The Research Group's objective is to enhance the quality, safety, accessibility, and productivity of healthcare by supporting the implementation of digital solutions for the public, patients, and professionals, underpinned by rigorous, cross
- and multi-disciplinary research, development, and evaluation. We are building a dynamic team and we are seeking for a research fellow in any of the areas of healthcare informatics, digital healthcare, and health data science, to create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research and through publication, as appropriate to the disciplinary area. The West Midlands HealthTech/MedTech '6D' Innovation Accelerator project will work with a regional consortium to provide a unique platform for businesses to accelerate the translation of novel innovations through clinical and commercial impact by creating a network of expertise and an integrated programme of initiatives to support companies with their journey. There will be several centrally co-ordinated activities designed to identify requirements for - and tackle barriers to - medical translation, in which the post-holder will support companies as required.


Role Summary


This role will be central to the programme in the delivery of scientific services and commercial pathway support to assist companies engaging with the programme.

The role will also advise on the route to market management activities, and provide project management for the research and innovation members of the Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group, participating in the West Midlands HealthTech/MedTech '6D' Innovation Accelerator project.


The successful postholder will:

  • Support the management of original research, which has measurable outcomes and is reflected in a growing national and often incipient international reputation in any of the fields of healthcare informatics, digital healthcare, and health data science.
  • Plan, design, and coordinate management and commercial activities as part of the project, within the Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group and Department of Electronic, Electrical and System Engineering, within the School of Engineering, and the overall consortium associated with the project.
  • Support dissemination of the group's research in paperwriting where appropriate. Support the publication of reports with the results of research in the project.
  • Provide advanced management and commercial marketing assistance to the development of medical innovations across expertise.
  • Support the raising of funding by working with companies, as appropriate. Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar.

Main Duties

  • Collect research and commercial data relating to the activities of the project.
  • Analyse research and commercial data, as directed.
  • Present project outputs, including drafting reports, commercial marketing analyses, academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.
  • Develop or adapt management techniques, models and methods appropriate to the needs of the project.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research.
  • Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully. Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in daytoday activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
