    Job description:

Strategy and Government Advice (SGA) provides advice, support and delivery of work for Natural England's 4 programmes and Marine, Strategy and Managing the Organisation.

The team advises the government on the development of its environmental policy relevant to our remit; develops and delivers new programmes and pilots for the government to support major strategies such as the Environment Act and 25-Year Environment Plan; leads stakeholder relationships with key national-level partners and develops internal standards and guidance on novel issues.

The Strategic Solutions Team sits within the Sustainable Development part of Strategy and Government Advice.

The focus of the Strategic Solutions team is to make effective contributions to the delivery of the SD Programme 5 Year Aims by:

- influencing government's reform agenda (including planning and environmental assessment reforms, Glover) to deliver for the natural environment
- developing strategic solutions to planning and marine licensing challenges affecting large areas or multiple sites; and handling government relationships to support this
- handling important national stakeholder relationships, for example infrastructure stakeholders; and
- providing strategic advice to support and enable terrestrial and marine business improvement and casework reform.

Job description

This position is based nationally.

We are looking for a Senior Adviser to lead on communication and stakeholder engagement activities for the Strategic Solutions Team.

The team works across the marine and terrestrial environment to identify and develop strategic solutions that can be designed once and then used many times to enable sustainable development and support planning decision-making, whilst delivering better environmental outcomes.


The post holder will directly contribute to the delivery of strategic solutions by adapting and delivering our Stakeholder Engagement / Communications plan.

As an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player with excellent lateral thinking and a proactive outlook, you'll need to use initiative and motivation to successfully deliver the Team's Stakeholder Engagement Plan.

By working collaboratively and seeking feedback you will help to identify further areas for improvement to inform the future delivery of the team's ambitious work programme.

The post holder will work very closely with colleagues across Strategy and Government Advice and the SD Programme Team.


Key Tasks and Accountabilities
This is a fast-evolving work area and specific responsibilities will develop and change over time. The post holder will need to maintain a flexible and adaptable attitude and approach.


Initial priorities are described below:

  • Act as focal point for the team on internal communications and engagement activity, participating in and contributing to relevant networks (e.g. across Strategy and Government Advice and SD Programme).
  • Proactively plan and lead digital communications to help raise awareness of the Team's role in helping facilitate sustainable development and enable nature recovery.
  • Work with technical leads within the team to monitor and coordinate delivery of external stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Establish and maintain close working with our External Affairs team.
  • Evaluate past team communications and engagement to understand where these could be improved and where appropriate, identify further key stakeholders to engage with.
  • Actively engage with organisational standards and governance structures.
