Job description:


HM Coastguard (HMCG) is the operational arm of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) with responsibility for 6 Coastguard Functions - Search and Rescue (SAR), Pollution Response, Vessel Traffic Management, Maritime Safety, Maritime Security and Emergency and Disaster management.

There are four delivery disciplines within HM Coastguard, Maritime Operations, which coordinates activities from an operations room environment, Aviation which operates the Aeronautical Coordination Centre from an operations room environment, Coastal Operations which manages resources and service provision on the coast, and Counter Pollution and Salvage which responds to at sea and shoreline pollution incidents and ensures that ports and harbours have response plans in place.


We are looking for a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) professional, or an individual who holds a V103/1 VTS Operator holder Qualification, to join the MCA team in the role of Vessel Traffic Services Team Leader.


The Vessel Traffic Services Team Leader is responsible for leading and managing a team of VTS Operators at Dover CGOC (Coastguard Operations Centre) utilising planning skills at the Operational level to achieve tactical / strategic benefit.


In addition, you will be responsible for the leadership and management of a team of VTS Operators to deliver the VTS operations within the defined VTS areas of the Channel Navigation Information Service and Sunk VTS.


Additional Information:

This role will be based in the Dover MCA HQ.


There may be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK, which may involve overnight stays away from home.


The role holder will be required to work shifts 24/7 and will be expected as and when required to participate in local management meetings that may fall outside of your rostered hours.


Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • The role holder will be expected throughout their period of duty to work collaboratively with peers and to provide the VTS Manager with a regularly updated analysis of the risk picture for their delegated area of responsibility and/or function including recommendations for adjustments to workload distribution.
  • Managing the effective provision of a vessel traffic service for their Area of operation, ensuring that adequate resource(s) are directed and dedicated to maintaining this service in accordance with the UK's obligations.
  • Responsible for the management for VTS Operators within their operational teams, ensuring competence and training is maintained in accordance with the IALA guidelines and recommendations, liaising with the Training and Standards Officer to ensure suitable interventions as required.
  • Balancing work against resource where assessed as necessary where there is a skills deficiency in the role holder's team, or where workloads may exceed the capacity of the roleholder's team recommending additional staff or assistance from other teams to provide suitable coverage.
  • Undertake training to meet the V103/2 VTS Supervisor and V103/4 On-JobTraining Instructor

Person specification:


To be successful in this role, you will have experience in VTS and hold a currently valid V103/1 VTS Operator holder Qualification.

You have experience of managing teams in an operational environment, with excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills. You have the ability to adapt and reflect your approach to suit diverse audiences and a range of stakeholders.
